Road Tripping: Tigers Pick Up First Conference Win; Fall To Flagler

Frankfort, Ky. – In the first two games of a three-game road swing, Savannah State men's basketball recorded a tough loss to Flagler before picking up a big win over Kentucky State this week.

The Tigers, now 2-1 overall, close the road swing at Central State on Monday night. They return to Tiger Arena on Dec. 1 to face Flagler again.

On Tuesday's first matchup against Flagler—a NCAA Division II, Peach Belt Conference member—The Tigers were outpaced in the first five minutes. The Lions opened with a 15-4 run while Savannah State registered five turnovers to start the game. By the half, Flagler had a 46-22 lead.

The second half played about the same as the first. Savannah State struggled to get shots to drop, but improved their field goal percentage in the second half to 36.4% from a dismal 28.1% in the opening half. Meanwhile, Flagler sank buckets at a 69.2% clip in the second half, outscoring the Tigers 40-28 for a final score of 86-50.

The Tigers were led by Eleik Bowles, Ayjay Plain and Warner Davis who all scored 11 points in the loss.

Savannah State flipped the script in the next game on Saturday picking up their first Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) win at Kentucky State.

Improving on the dismal shot array against Flagler, Savannah State managed a 54.2% clip from the field in the opening half against Kentucky State, putting away 57.1% of three-point offerings as well for a 36-32 lead at the half.

The Tigers dropped off in the second half, going 9-for-25 from the field for a 36% average. With three minutes to play, Elavian Bowles sank a pull-up jump shot in the paint to push Savannah State out to a 63-53 lead which would be enough to hold off the Thorobreds off down the stretch.

The Tigers sealed up the 65-59 win minutes later. Elavian Bowles led Savannah State with 12 points on the night outpacing his brother Eleik Bowles, the team's top scorer, who managed four. Plain finished the win with 10 points.

Eleik Bowles leads the team after three games, averaging 12.7 points a game. Plain is putting 11.0 points a game while Za'Khari Cobb is scoring 6.6/game.
