Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Tigers Open 2022-23 Season With Back-To-Back Wins

Mobile, Ala. – Savannah State women's basketball opened the 2022-23 season this weekend with back-to-back wins at the Miles College Classic, showcasing their tough defense in both victories.

The Lady Tigers—who finished last season 27-3—beat Oakwood University 88-70 on Saturday and Miles College 62-57 on Sunday to open the new season 2-0.

In the first 10 minutes of basketball this season, the Lady Tigers were struggling. With 52 seconds to play in the first quarter against Oakwood, they trailed 13-23. Bria Gibbs sank two free-throws to cut that lead to eight before the end of the quarter.

Gibbs than opened the second quarter with a layup in the paint that sparked an 8-2 run for Savannah State that cut Oakwood's lead to 25-23. A few minutes later, Nyla Allen tied the game up at 31. By the half, Savannah State moved in front 40-35 as they shook off the opening-day jitters and found their rhythm.

But Oakwood didn't go away quietly. After leading for much of the third, Savannah State again trailed after a six unanswered points from Oakwood. But Amari Heard ended the third with two good free-throws to cut Oakwood's lead to 59-58 into the final quarter.

Mia Goolsby opened the fourth with a three-pointer that sparked a 10-2 run for Savannah State and soon they had a double-digit advantage on Oakwood. The Lady Tigers held Oakwood to only 11 points in the final quarter and put up 30 on the other end for the final score.

Gibbs finished with a double-double scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 boards. She shot 6-for-13 from the field and a perfect 7-for-7 at the charity strip. Heard scored 17 while Allen tacked on 12, Autumn Westmoreland put up 11 and true freshman Amani Hamilton scored 10.

Against Miles, the game was a nearly even match. Savannah State outscored the Golden Bears 20-14 in the first quarter, but were outscored 20-14 themselves in the second for a tie game at the half. Each team put up 12 points apiece in the third for a 46-all score into the final quarter.

Allen opened the fourth for the Lady Tigers with two good free-throws for the advantage, but the game was quickly tied up behind a good jump shot from Miles' Tederia Ashley that opened a 9-0 run for the Bears.

But then the tough SSU defense went to work, holding Miles to only two points over the last six minutes of play.

On the other end, Westmoreland sank a three-pointer and followed that with a short jumper; Goolsby hit a three and Gibbs put one up in the paint to reverse the advantage with 40 seconds to play in the game. Jashiyah Jones sank four good free throws in the final seconds for the five-point lead at the end of regulation.

Heard led the Lady Tigers with her first double-double of the new season, scoring 16 points and snagging 15 rebounds. Goolsby put up 14 points while Jones and Gibbs each scored 10 in the win.

Savannah State continues with back-to-back Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) road matches over the final days of November. They face Kentucky State on Nov. 26 and Central State on Nov. 28.

Their home opener will be on Dec. 3 when they host Anderson University in Tiger Arena for a non-conference warmup.
