SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State hosts Virginia University of Lynchburg for a non-conference, Homecoming game on Saturday.

Savannah State and VUL's first meeting was in 2019. Since that game, both programs changed coaches. Savannah State's 27th Head Coach Aaron Kelton will meet VUL's new Head Coach Tim Newman for the first time as Kelton looks for his first win on home turf as the Tigers' head coach.

The Tigers hit the road next week for their final away game. They play Clark Atlanta in Atlanta on Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. before opening a three-game home stand to close the season. (The Oct. 29 game will be played in Macon, Ga., but is considered a home game for Savannah State.)

LAST GAME
Savannah State returned to home turf last week, hosting Kentucky State in an SIAC battle that ran in favor of the visitors from the kickoff. The winless Thorobreds had a commanding first half on both sides of the ball en-route to a 28-13 win in Theodore A. Wright Stadium.

TOP OFFENSIVE PLAYERS
Jadon Adams, a redshirt-freshman, started the season as the third-string quarterback and now tops the passing stats and leads the Tigers in rushing stats. From the pocket, he's completed 21-of-38 attempts this year with two interceptions, amassing 284 passing yards and five touchdowns. On the ground, Adams has rushed 55 times for 232 yards and three touchdowns.

After Adams struggled against Kentucky State, JT Hartage took over the offense and had a strong outing. He now leads the passing stats, completing 25-of-39 tosses with one interception and one touchdown.

When the ball is in the air, look for #17 Da'Shun Mitchell, #5 Randy Scott, #8 Brent Carr, or #15 DeMarion Colbert to make a big play. Mitchell leads the receiving core with 19 catches for 240 yards and a one touchdown.

On the ground, you will see powerback #1 Shamarcus Poole and freshmen #32 Joseph Hampton handle the runs. Poole has 189 yards on 44 carries this year. Hampton has 75 yards on 17 carries.

TOP DEFENSIVE PLAYERS
Savannah State's defensive line has been tough all year, keeping pressure on offenses and forcing quick plays and turnovers. That is thanks to a returning core that includes #0 Makenly Newbill (18.0 tackles) and #49 Jonathan Glover.

In the backfield, #48 Tavare Brewton (20.0 T), and #23 Amiri Johnson (19.0 T) lead the Tigers' defensive stats along with #10 Deon Bell (17.0) and Uchenna Nwoha (15.0 T).

LAST MATCHUP WITH VUL
In September of 2019, Savannah State and Virginia University of Lynchburg faced off on the gridiron for the first time in program history. The Tigers rolled to a 60-21 win, handing then new Head Coach Shawn Quinn his first victory as a Tiger.

OPPONENT SCOUTING REPORT
Virginia University of Lynchburg is a private HBCU Christian university that competes in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). Tim Newman took over the program ahead of this season and booked a schedule of mostly road games with only one home game on the slate. They've visited Presbyterian (L, 21-13), Delaware State (L, 35-19), N.C. Central (L, 14-40), Morgan State (L, 44-10) before visiting Savannah today.
