Tigers Drop Road Game To Clark

ATLANTA, Ga. – Savannah State struggled to rebound from a two-score deficient in the first half, falling to Clark Atlanta, 12-21, on Saturday at the Panthers' Homecoming game.

Clark Atlanta broke a five game losing streak to Savannah State that dates back to 1998 in the programs' 47th meeting. The Tigers still hold the series advantage, 27-19-1, which dates back to 1956.

Savannah State falls to 3-4 overall this season and 2-3 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) action. Clark improved to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in SIAC.

Following a scoreless first quarter, Clark was the first to strike. Shariff Brown pounded in a two-yard touchdown run that capped a 7-play, 46-yard drive with 12:53 on the clock in the second quarter for a 7-0 home team advantage.

Savannah State made it to midfield on their ensuing possession, but the offense sputtered after only a gain of 25 yards. A solid 45-yard punt from Henry Tome set Clark up on their own 5-yard line. But they wouldn't stay there long.

On the fourth play of Clark's next possession, Daquon Kincy broke free for a 61-yard touchdown rush only seven minutes after the home team's first score, pushing Clark out to a 14-0 lead.

The Tigers again struggled to get the offense moving under redshirt freshman Jadon Adams. They moved the ball only nine yards on three plays after Clark's second touchdown.

But Savannah State's defense went to work on the Panthers' next possession, stopping them on the SSU 41 after a big sack pushed Clark back. Savannah State recorded four sacks on the day for a loss of 34 yards. Makenly Newbill led that charge with 2.5 sacks.

Savannah State managed no gain on their final drive of the half as JT Hartage took a seven-yard loss on a sack and Adams rushed on the next play for seven yards as time ran out.

The Tigers opened the third quarter with the ball and finally found a spark on offense. Running back Shamarcus Poole and Adams pushed the offense 66-yards to the Clark 23-yard line. But the drive failed to score after eating up the first six minutes of the second half.

The Savannah State defense went to work, forcing Clark to turn the ball over on downs after only three plays. Hartage and the SSU offense then found some room to work on the next possession.

Hartage opened the drive with a 28-yard pass to Da'Shun Mitchell, putting the Tigers deep in Clark territory. After a one-yard gain rush, Hartage hit DeMarion Colbert with a 34-yard touchdown strike for Savannah State's first points of the game. The extra point was blocked. With 6:44 to play in the third quarter, the Tigers trailed 6-14.

The score would hold until the fourth quarter. To open the final quarter, Brown capped a massive 12-play, 78-yard, nearly eight minute drive with a touchdown pass to Ronnie West to push the home team out to a 21-6 lead with 5:59 to play in the game.

Savannah State answered the touchdown with one of their own on their next possession. Hartage drove the Tigers down the field and on third down from the Clark 15-yard line, hit Brent Carr with a touchdown strike. SSU went for two, but failed, setting up the final score, 12-21.

Clark put up 311 yards of total offense to Savannah State's 290. The Tigers had eight costly penalties for a lost of 59 yards in the game and tossed two interceptions for a loss of 10 yards.

Hartage led the quarterbacks, completing 9-of-15 passes for 158 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. Adams completed 5-of-7 passes for 44 yards and one interception. Adams led the rushing with 61 yards on 22 carries. Poole put up 22 yards on eight carries. Mitchell again led the receiving core with 78 yards on six catches.

Freshman Tavare Brewton led the Tiger defense with nine tackles. Marlon Jackson had seven, including 2.5 tackles for a loss and .5 sacks. Deon Bell racked up six tackles and Newbill had five on the day, including 2.5 for a loss.

Savannah State returns to home turf next week to take on reigning SIAC East Division Champion Albany State. Kick-off in Theodore A. Wright Stadium is set for 5 p.m.
