Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Tigers Pick Up 11th Consecutive Win, Beating Edward Waters

EDITOR'S NOTE: An earlier version of information released stated the Lady Tigers set a new school record for most consecutive wins to open a season with their 9-0 record. That information was incorrect. The 1992-1993 team opened that season 11-0 under Phillip Wallace, now the head women's basketball coach at Miles College.

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Two tough teams battled until the very end in Tiger Arena on Monday, but it was Savannah State's work on both ends of the court that eventually led them to their 11th consecutive victory as they beat Edward Waters 79-87.

The Lady Tigers have now tied the school record for most wins to open a season with an 11-0 overall record and a 5-0 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) record.

But Monday's victory didn't come easy against an 11-6 Edward Waters team.

The non-conference bout was a showcase of what will eventually be a border rivalry between the two schools. This season, Edward Waters is a provisional SIAC member having just moved up to NCAA Division II from the NAIA. Next season, the Tigers from Jacksonville, Fla. will be full members in the SIAC East Division with Savannah State.

Savannah State opened Monday, as they usually open games, with some lights-out shooting and stellar defense. In the first quarter, they outscored Edward Waters 28-10 and forced 10 turnovers with six steals, scoring 16 of their points on turnovers.

Undeterred, Edward Waters fired back in the second quarter, dropping 23 points to Savannah State's 16. At the 8:08 mark of the second quarter, Savannah State led by 24 points (36-12). Edward Waters then opened a 19-6 run over the next eight minutes to cut the Lady Tigers lead to 42-31.

But the early, massive scoring effort from Savannah State held and the Lady Tigers went into the locker room up 44-33. The third quarter was an scoring bonanza for both teams as the defensive effort tired. Savannah State held a 26-21 edge for a 70-54 lead after three quarters.

The visitors, however, kept on the pressure into the fourth period. Savannah State held a double-digit lead through most until Imani Dockery dropped a field goal with 3:37 to play to cut the Lady Tigers lead to 79-70. Down the final stretch, Edward Waters got within six points of Savannah State's lead. But it wasn't enough as their final push fell short and the Lady Tigers sealed up the win.

Le'Andrea Gillis led Savannah State in the win with 25 points—her 10th game this season in double figures. Mia Goolsby put up 19 points, a season high. Bria Gibbs and Azhana Maxwell each added 12 in the win. LaQuanza Glover led the field with 28 points for Edward Waters.

Savannah State travels to Alabama this week to play a makeup game against Spring Hill College. Tip-off for the Jan. 12 game is set for 7 p.m. CST. The Lady Tigers then travel to Fort Valley State on Jan. 15 for another key SIAC game before returning home on Jan. 17 for an SIAC doubleheader against Clark Atlanta. Tip-off in Tiger Arena is set for 5:30 p.m.
