Lady Tigers Cruise Past Spring Hill Into First Place

MOBILE, Ala. – Savannah State continued its incredible offensive effort on Wednesday with another double-figure win.

Five Lady Tigers scored in double figures as the team cruised to a 76-58 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) win over Spring Hill College. The game was a rescheduled makeup after the originally scheduled Jan. 3 game was postponed.

With the win, Savannah State improved to 12-0 on the season and 6-0 in SIAC play, pushing them into first place in conference standings over the 6-1 Benedict College.

As they have in most of their wins this season, Savannah State opened with a high-scoring first quarter. They have average at least 22.3 points in the opening of every game this season and Wednesday was no different as they outscored Spring Hill 22-13 to open. The Lady Tigers tacked on another 20-plus point second quarter for a 43-26 lead at the half.

Into the third quarter, Spring Hill opened a 13-0 run over six minutes to cut Savannah State's lead to only seven points, 48-41, with 3:11 to play. Sparked by back-to-back three-pointers from Ta'Kyla Austin the Lady Tigers answered with an 8-2 run to push back out to a 13 point advantage by the end of the period.

By the midway point of the final period, Savannah State was back out to a nearly 20 point lead, as they turned on the defense, holding Spring Hill to only 15 points in the final quarter.

Bria Gibbs pulled down 12 rebounds and scored 17 points in the win for her fifth double-double of the season to lead the Lady Tigers. Junior transfer Shekinah Howard put in a season-high 15 points while scoring leader Le'Andrea Gillis registered 14. Azhana Maxwell put away 13 points for her fifth double figure game and Austin added 12.

Savannah State travels to Fort Valley State on Saturday, Jan. 15 for a key SIAC game against an SIAC East Division rival before returning home on Jan. 17 to face Clark Atlanta in Tiger Arena. Tip-off on Monday is set for 5:30 p.m.
