Tigers roll past Livingstone 50-6

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- It's usually a good sign when your kickoff return defense is exhausted after the game.

Savannah State University made it a busy night for the special teams Saturday night. The Tigers rolled up 495 yards and produced seven touchdowns and a field goal while overwhelming Livingstone College 50-6 before 3,652 fans at Theodore A. Wright Stadium.

SSU evened its record at 1-1 after the first game of a three-game homestand.

It was an explosive outing for the Tigers on Armed Forces Night. Freshman quarterback Jamurian "JT" Hartage threw for two touchdowns -- 33 and 34 yards to Einaj Carter -- and ran for another.

Starting quarterback D'Vonn Gibbons passed for one score to DaMarion Colbert and ran for another. And Ny'em Bozeman returned two blocked punts for touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Kenneth Lockhart kicked three extra points and a field goal and backup kicker Henry Tome added two PATs.

SSU coach Shawn Quinn liked how his team responded after a season-opening 53-7 defeat to Valdosta State.

"We practiced good this week and showed some maturity," Quinn said. "People ask, "What's the lesson in losing?" Well, it stinks and you don't want to do it again. There's no lesson and there's no fun."

After a slow start, SSU put up 30 points in a span of 11:29 of the second quarter. Hartage replaced Gibbons at quarterback and immediately sparked the onslaught. Hartage completed his first pass—a 28-yarder to Andunte Deveraux—then scrambled 11 yards before throwing a pinpoint 33-yard TD toss to a diving Carter to make it 7-0.

"We saw their defense was playing me man-to-man and my quarterback just got it to me," Carter said.
"Easy six," Hartage said

Brendan Jackson recovered the ensuing fumbled kickoff and, two plays later, Hartage scooted 24 yards for another touchdown and within 68 seconds it was 14-0.

"It wasn't the first time getting my opportunity to come in as the backup," Hartage said. "I was calm, collected and went in and did my job."

Another Hartage 24-yard run on a fourth-down play on the Tigers' next possession moved the team to the Blue Bears' 16. Five plays later, Gibbons scored from the 3 to extend SSU's advantage to 21-0.

Hartage finished with 226 total yards—64 passing and 62 rushing—while accounting for three touchdowns.
Carter had three catches for 75 yards and two scores.

SSU's defense made it an equally long night for the Livingstone offense. The Blue Bears from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) didn't make their initial first down until 3.2 seconds were left in the first half.

"We came out more focused and we were solid in what we did," defensive lineman Makenly Newbill said.

Livingstone, which managed only 94 offensive yards, averted the shutout when Jordan McKinney threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Lamontay Carr with 4:41 left.

Meanwhile, SSU was headed halfway to 100.

Carter caught a 34-yard scoring toss from Hartage with 1:42 left in the first half to make it 27-0 and Lockhart's 21-yard field goal with 16.4 seconds left boosted the lead to 30-0.

In the second half, Gibbons returned and engineered an 11-play, 62-yard drive, culminated by a 13-yard TD pass to Colbert.

In the fourth quarter, two blocked punts were returned for touchdowns by Ny'em Bozeman.

"We didn't play great in my opinion. There's always something to work on," Quinn said. "Any time you win 50-6 there are positives, but we have to play cleaner. We're going to play a good team in Benedict next week and we have to get right back to work."
