Softball Splits Twin Bill with Benedict College

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Savannah State split a doubleheader with Benedict College this weekend, as they head into the final few games of the 2021 season. They are 10-5 overall this season.

The Lady Tigers entered this weekend's twin bill with Benedict College off a four-game series rout of Clark Atlanta last weekend, where they racked up 55 runs on 51 hits. Savannah State softball leads all of NCAA Division II in batting percentage.

And the hits kept coming this weekend against Benedict.

Savannah State opened game one on Sunday per usual, taking a 5-1 lead through the first three innings, stacking up five hits. But Benedict responded in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs on two hits and one SSU error to cut Savannah State's lead to 5-4.

Jayden Moore singled to open the fifth for Savannah State. Then Alisyn Ferrell homered to right, to lift the Lady Tigers to a 7-4 lead. It was Ferrell's second homer of the season. However, the bottom of the frame would prove fatal for the Lady Tigers. Benedict racked up four runs on four hits with a home run of their own to go up 8-7 into the sixth.

The Lady Tigers registered a single hit in the sixth, but were unable to turn it for a run, stranding the tying run. Benedict, with the momentum, added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and held off a late rally attempt from Savannah State in the top of the seventh, stranding a runner, to seal up the 10-7 win in game one.
