Softball Splits Doubleheader With Benedict To Close Winning 2021 Season

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State softball closed out the 2021 season on Friday, splitting a doubleheader with Benedict College on Lady Tiger Field in Savannah.

The Lady Tigers conclude the program's 19th season 11-6 overall and nationally ranked in several categories. It's the first winning season for softball since the 2016 team finished 26-23. In NCAA Division II softball, Savannah State is ranked No. 1 in on base percentage, has the No. 2 best batting average (.388), and are No. 4 in scoring and slugging percentage out of 288 teams.

Fifth-year senior Shayna Byers is ranked No. 3 nationally in triples per game, No. 3 in doubles per game, No. 4 in runs per game, and 33rd in batting average.

Savannah State opened the doubleheader on Friday looking like the ranked team they are. In the bottom of the first inning, Morgan Green and senior Kameryn Baker each reached on hits. Byers scored them both on a double to center field. Tanisha Williams doubled to score Byers and the Lady Tigers were up 3-0, holding all the momentum.

They added two more runs in the third inning on hits from Green, Baker and Williams for a 5-0 lead into the fourth inning. But Benedict shifted the entire the game in their favor in the opening of the fourth.

The visitors racked up six runs on three hits and several costly SSU errors for a 6-5 lead, after an exhausting inning that saw Benedict bat around their order. Savannah State managed only two more hits in the final four innings, stranding two runners. Benedict put up seven more runs for a 13-5 victory. Despite the excellent start for Savannah State, Benedict out-hit the Lady Tigers 11-5 in the contest.

Williams was tagged with the pitching loss after a complete game in the circle. She allowed nine earned runs on 11 hits with seven walks and five strikeouts against 40 batters. Deyonce Lewis earned her eighth pitching win of the season after a complete game. She allowed five earned runs on nine hits with no walks and three strikeouts against 29 batters.

Benedict carried the momentum of the final four innings of game one into the opening of game two, scoring three runs on five hits right off the bat. Savannah State continued to struggle, failing to get a single hit through the opening two innings of game two. Benedict plated a single run in the third on two hits for a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the inning.

Mahogony Johnson then changed the tide of the game on a bunt single that seemed to break the spell for the Lady Tigers. Green walked after Byers was hit with a pitch to load the bases. A wild pitch scored the first run for SSU, but hits from Casey Sims, Da'Ondalyn Simmons sparked five runs for Savannah State as the Lady Tigers pushed into the lead.

Benedict blanked in the opening of the fourth. In the bottom of the frame, Byers walked to reach. Amaiya Green then hit the only home run of the doubleheader, scoring Byers. Alisyn Ferrell singled, Sims repeated, as did Simmons and Savannah State pushed out to a 9-4 lead after four.

A short-lived rally from Benedict in the fifth saw a single run plated, but the Lady Tigers defense shut down the effort in the closing innings. Savannah State held on to win its final game of the season 9-5.

She leads with a .444 batting average, .833 slugging average, 24 hits, 21 runs, 10 doubles, 4 triples, 20 RBI through 54 at-bats. Green is just behind her with a .354 batting average, .500 slugging average, 17 hits, 17 runs, two triples, and seven RBI.

Following the cancelation of Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) spring championships, the Lady Tigers will not play a post-season.
