Softball Dominates Clark Atlanta In Four-Game Series, Scoring 55 Runs On 51 Hits

ATLANTA, Ga. – Savannah State softball had a stellar weekend, sweeping Clark Atlanta with a dominating performance--winning all four games in the series on run-rule victories.

The Lady Tigers won game one of the opening doubleheader 13-0, racking up 13 hits over five innings.  JaNesa Robinson, Shayna Byers, Da'Ondalyn Simmons, Leah Dudley and Alisyn Ferrell each had two hits in the win for Savannah State. Robinson and Ferrell each had a home run in the win as well.

Ferrell picked up her third pitching win after a complete 5.0 innings in the circle. She allowed no runs on a single hit with five strikeouts against 17 batters.

Game two of the opening doubleheader went down in similar fashion, Savannah State blanked Clark Atlanta 10-0 in five innings. The Lady Tigers racked up seven hits in the win with Tanisha Williams and Amaiya Green leading the offensive effort with two hits apiece.

Williams earned her second pitching win of the season after a complete game effort. She allowed no runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks against 21 batters.

In the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader, Clark Atlanta took their first and only lead of the series in the first inning, going up 2-0 behind three hits. But Savannah State responded in the top of the second, scoring nine runs on six hits. Dudley's blasted her first grand slam of the season towards the end of the inning to put the Lady Tigers in runaway mode.

Dudley, Robinson, Jayden Moore and Jocelyn Lozano each had three hits in the win to lead Savannah State at the plate. Ferrell earned the pitching win after 4.0 innings of work. She allowed three earned runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts against 21 batters.

Game four of the series, the second on Sunday, saw a bit of a slower start for Savannah State. They put up two runs early, but both teams went scoreless through the middle innings. Then everything broke the right way for the Lady Tigers in the fourth.

Robinson and Williams singled to reach. Then Byers doubled to score them. Green singled, then Mahogany Johnson doubled to score her and Byers. Then Jalexia Wright doubled, scoring Johnson. Later, Simmons scored Wright to tack up six runs on six hits for the Lady Tigers.

Savannah State repeated the fourth inning effort in the fifth, scoring six runs on five hits for a 14-1 win in five innings. Williams pitched a gem. She allowed one earned run on five hits with two strikeouts against 19 batters for her third win of the season.

From the plate, Byers and Green led the effort, both going 3-for-3. Johnson and Wright each added two hits in the win. Over the four game series, Savannah State scored 55 runs on 51 hits combined.

The Lady Tigers have three doubleheaders left in the regular season. Following the February decision by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) to cancel all spring championships, Savannah State softball will not play a post-season this year.

Savannah State will face Benedict College in two doubleheaders. The first one will take place in Columbia, S.C. on April 18. The Lady Tigers will host the second on April 23. They close out the season on April 27 against Flagler College on Lady Tiger Field.
