Tigers Sweep Salem In Three-Game Series

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State baseball put an emphatic stamp on the regular season this weekend with a three-game series sweep of Salem University.

Following a three-game series with Clark Atlanta in which the Tigers scored 60 runs over three games, Savannah State was poised for a follow-up performance.

In game one, on Sunday, the Tigers went to work early at the plate and didn't quit, winning 8-3 easily. They got a boost from some stellar pitching out of senior Christian Harkey.

Harkey recorded his fourth win of the season after a full 7.0 innings on the mound. He allowed two earned runs on four hits with four walks and seven strikeouts against 29 batters.

Salem came out swinging in game two. They put up two quick hits in the first inning and three more in the second, but were unable to plate any runs. The Tigers were muted in the opening two innings, recording no hits or runs.

In the opening of the third inning, Noah Suarez was hit with a pitch to reach and Austin Earl was walked by Savannah State starting pitcher Andrew Mann. Both advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch and then Josh Medina singled to score Suarez and Mann's day was done.

Enrico Peele came to the mound for the Tigers in relief. Despite the rough outing on Sunday, Mann, a newcomer, is 3-0 on the season. Mann pitched 2.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts after facing 13 at the plate.

Peele did his job well though, holding the Salem bats to only a single hit in 3.2 innings of work.

At the plate, the Tigers got something going in the third inning. Champion Robbins opened things off with a single to center and Gabriel Patxot pushed him to second on a SAC bunt. Joseph Smith grounded out as Robbins made third and Dwayne Franklin plated him on a single.

Savannah State trailed 1-2 into the fourth inning and looked as if they were about to open up some high-scoring middle innings. Senior Turner Davis doubled to center, scoring Max Tracey who was walked to tie the game.

Phillip Woullard, Jr. was also walked and Robbins singled to load the basses. But Salem made a pitching change that would shut down the Tigers scoring. Frankie Clearly came in relief for starter Billy Lintner. He quickly struck out Patxot and forced Smith into a groundout to help Salem escape the inning tied.

Clearly's entrance into the game opened a pitching battle that would push the match into extra innings.

After a hitless fifth inning, the game remained knotted up into the sixth inning. Salem put the go-ahead run on base in the sixth, but Peele found a way out of it. Staying poised, Clearly allowed no hits in the sixth as Savannah State went three up, three down.

Into the seventh inning, Peele took his leave and Matthew Terrill stepped to the mound in a closing role for Savannah State. But the pitching battle continued as both teams were unable to get a runner on base in the seventh.  (The day's doubleheader was originally scheduled as two seven inning games.)

Terrill hit Medina with a pitch to open the eighth inning and extra baseball. But he recorded a strikeout next. Then, from the plate, Davis caught Medina stealing second with a perfect throw to shut down the go-ahead run. A flyout ended the frame for Salem and their final chance to win.

Clearly opened the bottom of the eighth with two walks, putting the winning run in scoring position.  Jaden Oden came in to pitch hit for the Tigers and singled to first, loading the bases.

Tracey and Clearly went to battle for the win with no outs and loaded bags. Tracey won with a single to left field, scoring Franklin for the walk-off 3-2 victory. Shortly after touching first, his teammates rushed from the dugout with water bottles, showering him as the Tigers walked off with the doubleheader sweep.

Terrill picked up his second win of the season after pitching 2.0 innings in relief. He allowed only a single hit against seven batters.

After a hard fought battle for Salem, Clearly was nabbed with his first pitching loss of the season. He allowed one earned run on two hits with a game-high six strikeouts against 15 batters.

Game three of the series on Monday was back to business as usual for Savannah State—the business of putting runs across the plate.

In a first inning that lasted one hour and five minutes, Savannah State plated five runs on three hits with one Salem error and stranded three runners. Salem struggled to get runners on as the Tigers added three more runs in the second and two more in the third.

By the eighth inning, Savannah State led 13-5. The score would hold through the ninth as the Tigers reached into the bullpen to ensure the victory.

Jackson Hickox earned his first pitching win of the season after 5.0 innings of work. He allowed one earned run on three hits with five walks and five strikeouts against 24 batters. Senior Manny Carucci, Matthew Henderson, Rahmir Vaughn and Darius Hatchette-Dunn each pitched in relief, helping the Tigers seal up the series sweep.

At the plate, Robbins led Savannah State, going 3-for-3 with one RBI. Andrai Wright and Tracey each had two hits in the win.

The regular season might be over for Savannah State, although they may play one more series yet to be announced.

There is also a good chance they will play in the first ever HBCU World Series, set for April 28-May 1 in Montgomery, Alabama. The Tigers are ranked third in the small school Black College Nines Poll which will set the bracket for the World Series.

Stay tuned.
