Tigers Rout Middle Georgia, Set A New School Record

Savannah State concludes spring season 1-1

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Into his second season as the Head Football Coach, Shawn Quinn did not have the 2020 year he was hoping for, but on March 27 his team put an emphatic stamp on the end of an unprecedented spring season.

Savannah State beat Middle Georgia 85-0 in a rout that became painful to watch after two quarters. Quinn shuffled down the sideline in his black slacks and reflex blue shirt, yelling plays, keeping his team focused. These days, any chance to play a game, is a chance to win a game.

"It's been the most challenging season of my coaching career by far," Quinn told the Savannah Morning News in a post-game press conference. "With COVID-19 and all the hurdles we've faced, our players and coaches overcame everything that was thrown their way."

Since Savannah State began keeping records for the football program in 1915, 85 points is the most the Tigers have ever scored in a win. The closest any team came to that number was the 1988 squad who were led by legendary head coach Bill Davis. They beat Morehouse 70-13. The record is another mark for Quinn after setting a standard in his first year.

The Tigers originally sketched out a 9-game 2020 season, which was to follow the highly successful 2019 season in which the team finished 7-3 overall and 5-0 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). Following the shut down due to the pandemic, the Tigers went into a 10-week practice session. At the end, Quinn said, "It's like making dinner and never getting to eat it."

Anxious to play a real game, Savannah State scheduled two for the spring. They opened the season in Mobile, Alabama at the Gulf Coast Challenge and for three quarters against a good West Alabama team, their win streak seemed to be holding up. A tough fourth quarter put a damper on the streak. The Tigers fell 28-36.

Back in Theodore A. Wright Stadium for the first time in 511 days, it took Savannah State two plays to find the end zone against Middle Georgia. Quarterback D'Vonn Gibbons ran a 23-yard keeper at the 12:02 to open the slaughter that would ensue.

Middle Georgia's first three drives ended on either a fumble or interception. Savannah State scored on all 11 of their drives in the first half. After 30:00 minutes of play, the Tigers led 71-0.

"We have been on the other end of games like this when we played Miami and UAB, so it was good to be on the winning side of a game like this," Quinn said. "We had some local guys like Jordan Grant and Ameen Stevens do some great things, and we got to play everyone.

"There's not a lot of games you get to play in your career, so any time you get to play at home and get a win, it's a good day. We were excited to have the opportunity to go out and compete."

Agreeing the game was too lopsided to continue proper, the officials and head coaches agreed on two eight minute quarters to finish the second half. Following a scoreless third, the Tigers added two more touchdowns in the fourth for the final score.

Savannah State football continues to practice this spring in preparation for a proper fall schedule. The 2021 fall schedule has been written, but awaits the final signing of the contracts and will be released soon.
