Softball Splits With Edward Waters

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Coming off a doubleheader sweep of Albany State to open the season, the Lady Tigers were confident in their bats but faced an uphill climb against Edward Waters.

In a tale of two games, Edward Waters bested the Lady Tigers with some strong base running in the opening game, but Savannah State would respond in the second game with some strong defense.

Edward Waters lead-off batter Valeria Johnson opened things up on the first at-bat of the game, blasting a single off Savannah State pitcher Tanisha Williams. Edward Waters would go on to plate a single run on three hits for a quick lead.

They added four more runs on a single hit in the second, thanks to some highly skilled base running. They stole three bases and advanced over five bases on wild pitches to open the first two innings for a quick 5-0 lead over the Lady Tigers.

Savannah State's Mahogony Johnson scored on an error after reaching on a single in the second inning, but the score wasn't enough to shift the game's momentum. Edward Waters extended their lead in the third and fourth innings, scoring one run and then two, respectively. The Lady Tigers responded by also scoring a single run in the third and two more in the fourth. Into the sixth inning, Edward Waters led 8-4.

Brooke Spaulding singled to left, plating V. Johnson for a 9-4 Edward Waters lead in the sixth. Savannah State was unable to get anything going at the plate. The score would hold through the seventh as the visitors took game one by five runs.

In the bottom of the second of game two, the game scoreless, with two outs, Edward Waters loaded the bases. Mikayla Smith, in her first start of the season for Savannah State, forced V. Johnson into a fly out to strand the runners and save the inning.

After Savannah State failed to reach in the bottom of the frame, the visitors plated three runs on three hits, but also stranded three runners in the top of the third. The Lady Tigers responded in kind in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on four hits.

Again in the fourth Edward Waters put runners on. But Smith forced back to back fielder's choice putouts to strand two more runners and keep the score knotted at three all.

The visitors opened the fifth inning with three flyouts as Savannah State remained poised. In the bottom of the frame, Williams singled to reach. Casey Sims reached on an error. Jayden Moore then doubled to center, scoring both of them and lifting Savannah State to a 5-3 lead.

V. Johnson opened the sixth inning with a double and advance to scoring position on a wild pitch. Jade Mention singled to reach, putting the tying run on the bags for Edward Waters. Spaulding hit a sac fly to right field, plating V. Johnson for a single run. Then Smith forced the next two batters into a pop up and ground out, leaving the tying run on base.

In the top of the seventh inning, Edward Waters again threatened to take the lead putting two runners on with bunts. With two outs and the go-ahead run at second base for Edward Waters, Smith forced V. Johnson into a simple pop-up to shortstop to seal up the win for Savannah State.

Smith recorded her first win of the season, pitching a full 7.0 innings. She allowed four earned runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts after seeing 37 batters. Malani Sablan, a top NAIA pitcher, was tapped with her third loss of the season after 2.0 innings of work. She allowed one earned run on two hits.
