Lady Tigers Open Season With Doubleheader Sweep

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State softball opened the 2021 season on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep on Lady Tiger Field.

The softball program at Savannah State began in 2002, after the school's elevation to NCAA Division I. Last year was the first year the program competed at the NCAA Division II level and in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). Savannah State competed in the SIAC from 1969 to 2000.

The Lady Tigers were anxious to test their moxie in the new conference and got a taste of it in 2020, playing four conference games—going 3-1—before the pandemic cut the season short. In February, the SIAC announced there would be no spring championships, again cutting the Lady Tigers out of a chance to compete for a conference title. However, the Lady Tigers kept their games against conference opponents in place, to see where they stack up in the SIAC.

On Saturday, a fresh Savannah State softball team went head-to-head with fellow SIAC member school Albany State.

In game one, Albany State opened with a single run in the top of the first inning. In their first opportunity at bat, the Lady Tigers took advantage, plating five runs on six hits for a quick lead after one full inning.

With a lot of softball to play, Albany State was unfazed into the second and third innings. They scored four runs on two hits in the second and three runs on three hits in the third. Into the fourth inning, Savannah State trailed the Golden Rams 5-7.

After an explosive start to the game, Savannah State was sleepy at the plate through five innings, struggling to even get a runner on the bags. But everything broke the right the way in the sixth inning.

Fifth year senior Shayna Byers singled to left to reach, the first runner to get on base for the Lady Tigers since the first inning of the game.  Tanisha Williams followed with a single and then Jalexia Wright singled to reach. Morgan Green blasted a single to center scoring two runs, shifting the entire momentum of the game and series.

Savannah State would rack up a total of 10 hits in the bottom of the six, plating eight runs for a comfortable five-run lead into the seventh.

Williams, working a full game in the circle for Savannah State, let go a few hits in the top of the seventh, but forced a flyout and two groundouts to help the Lady Tigers seal up the 13-8 victory.

Williams earned her first pitching win of the season, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts after facing 36 batters. Williams also led at the plate, along with Byers, each going 3-for-4. Byers recorded three RBI and Williams had two in the win. Kameryn Baker two hits along with JaNesa Robinson and Amaiya Green.

In game two, Albany State opened with a single run again in the first inning and Savannah State responded with a single run to tie the game up into the second inning. In the bottom of the frame the Lady Tigers did some heavy damage at the plate, scoring seven runs on six hits, all singles.

Albany State struggled to plate anymore runs, stranding three runs over the subsequent three innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Green doubled to score freshmen Mahogany Johnson and Leah Dudley, ending the game via the run-rule—eight run lead after five innings—with a 10-1 victory.

Returner Allisyn Ferrell notched her first pitching win of the season after five full innings of work. She allowed one earned run on four hits with one strikeout after facing 20 batters.

Green was electric at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBI. Savannah State collected nine hits on the day.

Savannah State returns to action this Wednesday, March 24, with a doubleheader against Edward Waters on Lady Tiger Field. The game will be streamed live, for free, at ssuathletics.com/watch. Due to a mandate from the SIAC, all home games are closed events.
