Lady Tigers Pick Up Thrilling Win, Remain Undefeated

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Lady Tigers now have one of the best starts to a season in program history.

But their ninth consecutive win on Saturday came down to the wire. Savannah State opened with a 13-2 run and held onto a double-digit lead for most of the game going up by 21 points early in the fourth quarter.

Miles, however, were determined to pick up their ninth win this season. The visitors opened a 17-4 run over five minutes in the fourth quarter to cut Savannah State's lead to only eight points with 3:11 to play.

But the huge run was deterred by some stellar Lady Tiger defense in the waning minutes as Savannah State held the tough Golden Bears at bay to remain undefeated.

This week's SIAC Player of the Week, Bria Gibbs, led a tetrad of Lady Tigers in double-digits. Gibbs recorded her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Le'Andrea Gillis put away 17 points. Ta'Quashia Lumpkin and Mia Goolsby each recorded their first double-digit games with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Savannah State outscored Miles 22-12 in the opening quarter, 18-12 in the second and then nearly tied with a close 18-17 advantage in the third. Miles had a strong fourth quarter, outscoring the Lady Tigers 24-15.

Savannah State improves to 9-0 on the season and 4-0 in SIAC action with the key inter-divisional conference victory. The Lady Tigers are currently in second place in the SIAC East Division trailing 10-4, 6-0 Benedict.

The Lady Tigers shift into the winter break this coming week. They return to action in early January with an SIAC road game against Spring Hill on Jan. 3. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. CST.

TIGER BITES
  • The Lady Tigers 9-0 start is the best in program history since the 1992-1993 team opened 11-0 under coach Phillip Wallace Jr.—who is now the head coach at Miles. They surpass the 1993-1994 and 1994-1995 team's 8-0 openings.
  • Prior to coming to Savannah State in 2003, head coach Cedric Baker led Benedict to EIAC (Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) Championships in 2001 and 2002. Benedict has since become an SIAC perennial powerhouse, winning the 2019-2020 SIAC Championship. Baker will face off with his old program in hopes of winning the SIAC East Division this year.
  • Savannah State faces Benedict in Columbia, S.C. on Jan. 22 and then hosts them in Tiger Arena on Feb. 14.
  • Tuskegee—voted as the No. 1 team in the SIAC West in a preseason poll—will definitely be a team to beat this year. The Golden Tigers opened their season with a 74-72 win over NCAA Division I team Alabama State in an exhibition and currently lead the SIAC West with an 8-2, 4-1 record. They fell to Benedict on Nov. 27 and then beat them on Dec. 8.
  • The Lady Tigers will only see Tuskegee in the regular season once this year. They travel to Alabama on Jan. 5 for a key SIAC game and possible an 2021-2022 SIAC Championship preview.
  • Miles is ranked No. 10 in the South Region D2SIDA poll this week with Tuskegee and Savannah State just out of reach but receiving votes. Benedict is ranked No. 8 in the South Region. Tuskegee was the only SIAC team to make the Top 25 of the national poll earlier this season but have fallen out the top tier rankings since.
