Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Tigers Down LeMoyne-Owen For 8th Consecutive Win

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story stated the Lady Tigers set a new school record for most consecutive wins to open a season. That information was incorrect. The 1992-1993 team opened that season 11-0 under Phillip Wallace, now the head women's basketball coach at Miles College.

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State women's basketball is on fire.

The Lady Tigers opened their eighth game of the season with a 14-0 run and that was pretty much the end of the game. By the third quarter, Savannah State had a 30 point advantage over LeMoyne-Owen College in one of their best outings of the season.

Savannah State improved to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) play.

For the seventh time this season, veteran Le'Andrea Gillis scored double-digits, leading the entire field with 19 points. She was 6-for-12 from the field and 4-for-8 from the three-point line.

The SIAC Player of the Week Bria Gibbs was hot on the trail with 18 points of her own on the night. Gibbs has been a force to reckon with in the last few games. In back-to-back road wins, she recorded two double-doubles and is now averaging 11.4 points a game and leads in rebounding with 6.1 boards a game.

Gillis leads the team this year in scoring, averaging 13.3 points a game. Azhana Maxwell is averaging 10.4 points a game to top the stats. The well rounded team is getting solid assists from Amari Heard, Shekinah Howard, Ta'Kyla Austin, Nyla Allen and Autumn Westmoreland.

Savannah State closes out the semester on Saturday with a key SIAC matchup against Miles College (8-1, 2-1 SIAC) in Tiger Arena. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. and tickets are now on sale HERE.
