Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Tigers Dominate Weekend SIAC Schedule; Remain Undefeated

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Savannah State women's basketball is closing in on one of the best season openings in program history.

Over the weekend, the Lady Tigers opened Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) action with back-to-back road games, securing wins in dominating fashion.

They closed the weekend 7-0 overall and 2-0 in SIAC and are itching towards a school record. The 1993-94 Lady Tigers opened that season 8-0. It was the last best opening for a Savannah State women's basketball team.

Savannah State opened their road trip in Frankfort, Kentucky on Saturday with a visit to Kentucky State. They walked away with a 70-62 win after shooting 50% from the floor and 53.3% from beyond the arc.

After leading for most of the opening two quarters, Savannah State looked poised in the first half. With 1:36 left to play in the second quarter, Taleah Dilworth dropped a field goal to tie the game at 33 all into the locker room.

Kentucky State took their largest lead of the game to open the third quarter, 36-33. But the Lady Tigers quickly took over. Autumn Westmoreland nailed a three-pointer at the 8:33 mark to open a 11-2 run that was capped at the 5:55 mark by a field goal from Bria Gibbs.

With 2:18 to play in the third quarter, Kentucky State again tied the game at 48 all. But Azhana Maxwell and Amari Heard tacked on a three-pointer and two-pointer, respectively, to lift the Lady Tigers to a five-point advantage at the end of three rounds.

The fourth quarter was all Savannah State. With 3:36 to play, Maxwell hit a three-pointer to give the Lady Tigers their largest lead of the game, 68-58. Gibbs led the field with 18 points and 13 rebounds, her first double-double of the season. Le'Andrea Gillis tacked on 12 points in the win.

Monday's game in Wilberforce, Ohio against Central State was a very different story. There was no close call as the Lady Tigers controlled the game from the opening minutes.

Central State tied the game at 5 all at the 6:18 mark. The Lady Tigers then opened a 12-2 run over the next three minutes for a double-digit lead they would not relinquish. By the half, they led 34-18.

Second half was all bonus stats, led by some stellar defense. All together the Lady Tigers recorded 22 steals with Mia Goolsby leading with five. Gillis led the team in scoring with 16 points while Gibbs picked up another double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Maxwell tacked on 11 points in the win.

After seven consecutive wins, Savannah State is nationally ranked in several NCAA and SIAC statistical categories. The Lady Tigers are tied with 12 other teams at No. 1 for win-loss percentage. They are ranked No. 2 in all of NCAA Division II in three-point field goal defense and scoring margin.

Savannah State leads the SIAC in assists per game, scoring defense, scoring margin, scoring offense, three-point field goal percentage, field goal percentage (No. 12 nationally), and field goal percentage defense (No. 6 nationally).

The Lady Tigers return home for two SIAC games before the Holiday break. They face LeMoyne-Owen on Thursday (12/16) at 5:30 p.m. and Miles College on Saturday (12/18) at 2 p.m.
