Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Tigers Down Lane 66-58, Improve To 5-0

JACKSON, Tenn. – Savannah State women's basketball are off to one of the best starts in over two decades.

The Lady Tigers beat Lane College on Tuesday, 66-58, to improve to 5-0. It's the best opening record since the 1993-94 Lady Tigers started their season 8-0.

Savannah State's success this season has depended on two key factors, outscoring their opponents (by a margin of 413 to 263 this season, averaging 82.6 points a game) and tough defense.

The story was the same against Lane. At the 5:15 mark of the opening quarter, Lane tied the game at 8 all. The Lady Tigers quickly responded as Amari Heard opened a 10-3 run with a good jump shot and then capped the run with a good field goal at the 2:51 mark.

Savannah State finished the opening quarter up 23-17 and held onto that lead until the third quarter.

At the 8:22 mark of the third quarter Jordyn Neal hit a jump shot to tie the game at 37 all. Then a minute later, Takesia Barnes hit a 3-pointer to give Lane a 40-38 lead. Savannah State tied the game a few minutes later on two good free throws from Autumn Westmoreland.

But by the 2:58 mark of the third, the Lady Tigers were again trailing, 42-45. Bria Gibbons opened a small run for Savannah State with a good field goal that was followed by another from Heard for a 46-45 Lady Tiger advantage with 1:56 to play.

Heard, Le'Andrea Gillis and Jashiyah Jones each made baskets in the final minute of action to give the Lady Tigers a 51-48 lead into the final period.

Azhana Maxwell opened a significant run for the Lady Tigers at the 7:40 mark of the fourth quarter on a good field goal. The 10-0 snap was capped at the 4:19 mark with a field goal from Ta'Quashia Lumpkin for a 63-52 Savannah State lead. The double-digit advantage would be enough for the Lady Tigers to hold out for the win.

Maxwell led the field in scoring with a season-high 17 points in the win. Heard added a season-high 14 points and Gillis tacked on 12 of her own. Savannah State was out-rebounded by Lane 46-43 but Lane turned the ball over 23 times and the Lady Tigers took advantage, scoring 19 points off the turnovers.

Savannah State travels to Frankfort, Kentucky to open the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) schedule on Dec. 11. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
