Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Tigers Roll To 4-0

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State women's basketball are doing all the right things in the opening portion of the 2021-2022 season—winning be the most important.

On Saturday, the Lady Tigers cruised to a 77-43 win over NCAA Division II opponent Claflin University, and a 4-0 overall mark, behind their two ingredients for success this season, sharpshooting and tough defense.

Savannah State managed a 49.2 percent clip from the floor in the win. In a monster third quarter, however, they shot 71.4 percent, dropping 10 of 14 field goal attempts and 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. They outscored Claflin 28-7 in the third quarter, which turned out to be the difference maker.

Claflin opened Saturday's non-conference bout with a 6-2 run for the early lead. But the Lady Tigers bounced quickly with a 7-0 run off two forced turnovers, taking a 9-6 lead midway through the opening quarter.

Minutes later, Claflin would come within a single point of Savannah State's lead, but would not overcome it. Savannah State then pushed out with a late quarter run to end the first period up 17-11. Claflin would never again get that close to the Lady Tigers' advantage.

Savannah State put up 16 more points to Claflin's nine in the second period to head into the locker room with a comfortable 33-20 lead. But they only shot 37.5 percent from the floor, hitting of their 16 attempts and missing all 3-point shots.

In the third quarter, however, that would change. The Lady Tigers opened with a 10-2 run behind three-pointers from Ta'Kyla Austin and Shekinah Howard. By the end of the quarter, the Lady Tigers extended their double-digit lead to a triple-digit lead, 61-27.

Savannah State's powerful offense sputtered in the fourth, but it wasn't enough for Claflin to cut their lead down from triple-digits.

While Claflin grabbed more boards (42-41) than the Lady Tigers, Savannah State's tough man defense forced 21 turnovers, which they turned into 20 of their 77 points.

Coming off the bench, Azhana Maxwell led the entire field in scoring, dropping 13 points. Howard and Austin each added 10 in the win.

Le'Andrea Gillis led on defense, grabbing five rebounds but the usual high-scoring veteran sputtered with only three points. Gillis leads the team this season averaging 11.8 points a game.

Savannah State travels to Jackson, Tennessee on Nov. 30 for a non-conference game against Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) opponent Lane College. They then open SIAC action on Dec. 11 at Kentucky State.
