Lady Tigers Open Season With Dominating Win

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State women's basketball opened the 2021-2022 season on Saturday with five players scoring double-digits in a 121-48 rout of Morris College in Tiger Arena.

The Lady Tigers opened Saturday's non-conference game shooting 65 percent from the field in the first half, following a bit of a slow opening that quickly turned into a lopsided scoring bonanza. By the midway point, Savannah State led 58-26.

Savannah State outscored Morris 63 to 22 in the second half going up by as much 73 points. The Lady Tigers mid-court press did most of the work. They scored 51 points on turnovers and registered 24 steals in the game.

Veteran Le'Andrea Gillis led the field in scoring with 21 points. Gillis was perfect from deep, hitting 5-of-5 three-point attempts and was near perfect from the field dropping 8-of-10 field goal attempts. Newcomer Shekinah Howard followed with 14 points, going 6-for-9 from the field.

Fifth-year senior Ta'Kyla Austin joined them in double digits scoring 11 points. Autumn Westmoreland and Amari Heard added 10 points each. Westmoreland and Gillis led in rebounds with six each.

The last time the Lady Tigers put up 100 or more points on an opponent was Nov. 10, 2019 against Carver College (103-51). The 121 points in Saturday's game was the most in a win for Savannah State since a 155-26 rout of Wesleyan College on Nov. 6, 2018.

The Lady Tigers face College of Coastal Georgia on Monday in Brunswick, Ga. They host Georgia College on Wednesday, Nov. 24 in Tiger Arena and then Claflin University on Saturday, Nov. 27 before opening Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) action on Nov. 30 against Lane College.
