Lady Tigers Conclude 2021 Season At SIAC Championship

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Savannah State volleyball team ended their 2021 season on Monday at the 2021 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship.

The Lady Tigers finished 10-15 overall this season following two losses on Monday. In her first full year at the helm—after being named head coach in 2020 and serving as interim in 2019—Roselidah Obunaga has improved the program with back-to-back SIAC Championship tournament appearances and two of the best overall records in over a decade.

Savannah State earned their second post-season berth this year with a 6-9 SIAC record and a No. 4 ranking in the SIAC East Division.

Savannah State competed against the No. 1 seed in the SIAC West Division, Spring Hill to open the tournament on Monday. The Tigers were shutout by the reigning champs 0-3, falling in straight sets, 25-9, 25-8 and 25-10.

The Lady Tigers continued on in the double elimination bracket on Monday facing Benedict College in game two. In a back-and-forth match, Savannah State opened with a 25-20 win over the No. 2 East Division seeded Benedict. The Lady Tigers sealed up a 1-0 lead behind a kill from Imani Cook, a service ace from Imani Williamson and a final kill from Makayla Mondy.

But, Benedict roared back in the second set with a massive mid-set run that sealed up a 25-14 win and tied the match at 1-1. Into the third set, Savannah State tied up the game at 19 all behind a kill from Cook towards the end. Then freshmen Kloe Ludy served up two consecutive points for a 20-19 lead. Benedict answered with one more point and an error before the Lady Tigers finished with three strong points for a 25-20 win, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.

Benedict opened the fourth set with a 7-0 run, stunning the Lady Tigers out of the gate. Benedict continued racking up points as Savannah State struggled to get into the game. Sydney Harville sparked a late run for the Lady Tigers with four straight points on serves with two kills from Destiny Gaines. But, Benedict sealed up a win on costly SSU errors tying the game up at 2-2 with a 25-12 win.

In the final set, Benedict opened with a 4-0 run forcing Savannah State to take a timeout. The Lady Tigers were only able to manage seven points as Benedict sealed up the five-set match win with a 15-7 victory, ending the season for Savannah State.

This season, the Lady Tigers had three players win SIAC weekly awards. Destinee Langston won Newcomer of the Week for the week of Sept. 21; Harville was named the SIAC Setter of the Week during the week of Oct. 19 and Ludy was named the SIAC Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 10.
