ALBANY, Ga. – Savannah State football has spent seven weeks defending first place in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division. Today, they face their toughest challenge yet.

The Tigers travel to Albany, Ga. to face longtime rivals, the 6-1 and 3-0 Albany State Golden Rams on their home field. Both team's only loss this season was against Division II perennial powerhouse Valdosta State—the current No. 2 team in the nation.

The Tigers and Rams have been butting heads on the gridiron since 1932. Today is the 63rd contest between these two teams in recorded history. Albany State holds the advantage in the long-standing series at 43-17-2. In their last meeting, in 2019, Savannah State beat Albany 35-19 en-route to a 5-0 conference mark and 7-3 season in the Tigers' return to NCAA Division II and the SIAC.

The stats for both of these teams are impressive. ASU has scored 193 points and allowed only 42. Savannah State has scored 236 points and allowed 140. Total offense is nearly even at 2418 for SSU and 2397 for ASU.

Both teams are the only two in the SIAC receiving votes in the weekly AFCA Coaches Poll for Division II football. In a preseason SIAC poll, Savannah State was voted to finish No. 1 in the SIAC East Division. Albany State was voted to finish No. 2.

Savannah State's current six-game win streak is one of the largest in school history. The last time a Tiger team put together a string of consecutive wins this long, it was during the 1994, 1995 season under Joseph Crosby as an SIAC team. Crosby's Tigers ended the '94 season with a five-game streak and carried it over to '95 where they tacked on three more.
