Tigers Shutout By Albany State

ALBANY, Ga. –Savannah State's highly productive offense was stunted on Saturday as Albany State picked up its fourth shutout of the season, beating the Tigers 30-0 in a big Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) matchup.

The Albany State defense had an answer for nearly everything the Tigers threw at them. Savannah State only managed 59 yards of offense. This season, they have averaged 342 yards of offense a game.

On the other side of the ball, the Savannah State defense had several key plays that at first held the home team from scoring, but eventually, the Golden Rams found some room to put up points.

The loss stops a six-game winning streak for Savannah State and a 9-0 conference streak that dates back to the 2019 season. The 9-0 conference win streak is a record for the school. This is also Savannah State Head Coach Shawn Quinn's first SIAC loss since taking over the program in 2019. Quinn is now 14-6 overall and 9-1 in his head coaching career.

The Tigers fall to 6-2 on the season and 4-1 in the SIAC. Albany State improves to 7-1 on the season and 4-0 in the SIAC with two conference games remaining.

Through most of the first quarter, a defensive battle held both offenses off the board. Each team traded possessions ending with punts through the opening six drives.

Late in the quarter, Albany State pushed deep into Savannah State territory in their final possession of the quarter, but the Tiger defense held them out of the endzone. With 22 seconds left, Gabriel Ballina put away a 37-yard field goal to notch the first points of the game.

The Tigers opened the second 15 in their own territory. A couple of rushes pushed the ball, but a big sack from Albany State, the first of eight on the day, put them nearly in their own endzone. After the Tigers punted, the Golden Rams started a drive on the 50-yard line.

Against a tough Savannah State defense, Albany State only managed to move 20 yards. With 10:41 to play Ballina hit a 40-yard field goal for Albany State, notching them up 6-0 in the second quarter, to end their first possession of the second quarter.

Albany State's offense started to find the holes in the Savannah State defense, putting together 5-play, 2:09-minute drive, ending with a 3-yard rush by for the first touchdown of the game and a 13-0 lead with 6:41 to play to the half.

With all the momentum, Albany State came out firing on their third possession of the quarter. Dionte Bonneau connected on two long passes, that put the Golden Rams on the SSU 5-yard line with a fresh set of downs.

But the Tiger defense made a stand yet again and Billana was called on to kick a 23-yard field goal, his third of the game, lifting ASU to 16-0 with 2:32 to play to the half. On their final possession of the first half, Savannah State got a couple of first downs before Gibbons was sacked and the drive ended as so many of the day did.

Savannah State's defense opened the second half with a big stop. Brian Roberts nabbed an interception on a tipped pass from Bonneau giving the Tigers good field position and as fresh set of downs. But the Tiger offense struggled as Gibbons was sacked on third and 9 for a loss.

Albany State tacked on single touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters for the final 30-point victory. The Golden Ram offense put up 371 total yards with 22 first downs. Tyler Moore, in his first start of the season, led Savannah State's defense with six tackles on the day.

Savannah State is on the road again next week as they face Fort Valley State before returning home on Nov. 6 for their final regular season game against Edward Waters.
