UPDATE (Jan. 28, 2021):

HONOLULU, Hawaii -- "I am really in freaking Hawaii," former Savannah State lineman Michael Johnson Tweeted on January 27. After a stellar performance in the Tropical Bowl on Jan. 17, Johnson was invited to attend the 2021 Hula Bowl in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is the only Savannah State football player to be invited to both All-Star bowls.

The Hula Bowl roster is set and includes a myriad of players from NCAA Division I and Division II teams. The game is scheduled for Jan. 31 at 4:30 p.m. local time (9:30 p.m. EST) at the Aloha Stadium.

FROM EARLIER:

ORLANDO, Fla. – Two days before Christmas, Savannah State offensive lineman Michael Johnson accepted an offer to play in the 2021 Spiral Tropical Bowl.

Into its sixth iteration, the annual Spiral Tropical Bowl is a premier FBS Division I College Football All-Star Game held in Orlando-Kissimmee, Florida that showcases elite players to over 20 NFL scouts and general managers. Over 250 bowl alumni are currently sprinkled throughout teams in the NFL.
The 2021 Tropical Bowl will be held on Jan. 17 at 11 a.m. and is being streamed live on FloSports.

Johnson, who graduated in November from Savannah State with a Masters of Business Administration, after earning his bachelor's degree in criminal justice a year earlier, was considering using his final year of eligibility to come back to Savannah State this spring.

After being informed that nine NFL teams were scouting him, he decided instead to move towards a professional career in football. He was contacted by an agent who he later signed with. The agent helped him apply for the Tropical Bowl. The bowl coaches responded quickly with an invitation, saying that Johnson was already on their list of top prospects.

The 6-7, 310lb lineman, who is being recruited as either a guard or tackle, is the first football player from Savannah State to be invited to the Tropical Bowl.

"I always knew I was going to be good," Johnson said. "I focus. I stick to myself and I do what the coaches tell me. That's all that matters. And it worked. I am more nervous than excited. I got to make sure this is a good game. Because I don't have any film from this year. As long as I show out, they see I can move, it'll be alright."
