SAVANNAH, GA. – Four of Savannah State's starters put up double-digits on Monday as the Lady Tigers made quick and easy work of Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) foe Albany State in Tiger Arena.
With their seventh conference, the Lady Tigers move into third place in the SIAC East Division trailing the 12-2 Benedict Lady Tigers and the 8-6 Fort Valley State Lady Wildcats.
Savannah State improves to 12-5 on the season and 7-5 in SIAC action—their best start since the 2014-15 season when they went 21-11 overall and 13-3 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The Lady Tigers won the MEAC Championship that year as well.
The Lady Tigers opened Monday's game with an emphatic first quarter, outscoring Albany State 24-9. It was all SSU for the final three quarters as the Lady Tigers padded stats and had one their best outings of the season, shooting 52% from the floor and 42% from the 3-point line. They hit 18-of-24 free-throws for a 75% shooting clip.
Savannah State leads the SIAC in scoring this season, averaging 77.2 points a game. They were led on Monday by the top scorer in the SIAC,
Le'Andrea Gillis who put up 18 points on the night. Gillis is averaging 19.4 points a game this season.
Off the bench, freshman
Amari Heard also put up 18 points on the night, and nearly had her fourth double-double of the season with nine rebounds. Starters
Robbi Allen added 17 points of her own, while
Ta'Kyla Austin went 6-for-11 from the field for 13 points and
Azhana Maxwell tacked on 12 to round out the scoring. The Lady Tigers out-rebounded Albany State 49-26.
Savannah State hits the road for three key SIAC games. They play Miles College on Feb. 12, Paine College on Feb. 15 and top-dog Benedict on Feb. 17. They return to Tiger Arena on Feb. 20 and 22 for the final two games of the season against Clark Atlanta and Fort Valley State, respectively.
The SIAC Basketball Tournament is scheduled for March 2-7 in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
