SAVANNAH, Ga. – The 2019 Lady Tigers, in their first year competing in NCAA Division II, open
SIAC conference play this evening against Fort Valley State.
Coming off a hard-fought loss to College of Coastal Georgia last Monday, the Lady Tigers are looking to edge out their first win of the season and earn their first conference victory. Fort Valley won their season's opening match, 3-1, over Brewton-Parker College, who Savannah State will host next Monday.
SSU is also dealing with the tragic loss of
Karissa Tatum, who passed away after a car accident on Sept. 4. The Lady Tigers honored Karissa with a moment of silence ahead of their opening match last Monday and will continue to pay tribute to her memory this season with a dedicated spot on their bench that will hold Karissa's jersey.
After one game, statistically, SSU is led by sophomore
Valeria Aldarondo who has 10 kills and 13 assists. Junior
Ellana Gabrielle Nellis has 14 digs on the season with 5 kills and 2 service aces. Junior
Jedaiah Daniels leads the team in blocks with 5.
The Lady Tigers return home for their next match. They meet Brewton-Parker at Wilcox-Willey Gym Monday, Sept. 23 for a 6 p.m. game. It will be the final non-conference match before nine consecutive SIAC matches.
