Tigers Close Regular Season With Win

SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State baseball team closed their 2019 regular season with a 5-3 win over Bethune-Cookman, in a game played at Tiger Field.

Jalen Atterbury and Derek Rivera had two hits each for SSU while Joey Roberson drove in two runs.

The victory gives the Tigers a 12-25-1 overall record and a 10-14 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Bethune-Cookman took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning but the Tigers struck for four runs off three hits in the bottom of the second.

Austin Adams drew a walk and Dwayne Franklin was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Back to back singles by Rivera and Atterbury allowed Adams and Franklin to score and a double by Roberson brought home Rivera and Atterbury for a 4-1 lead.

In the fourth inning, Rivera and Atterbury hit back to back once again and a sacrifice fly by Luis Lamarche allowed Rivera to cross home plate to extend SSU's lead to 5-1.

Bethune-Cookman scored a run in the fifth  and another in the top of the ninth but could not get any closer.

SSU ended the game with six hits and one error while leaving six runners on base.

Tyler Robison pitched a complete game, giving up nine hits, three runs and two walks while recording four strikeouts.

B-CU was led by Zach Spivey who went 3 for 4 at the plate. Spivey drove in a run and scored once.

Wildcat starter Isaak Gutierrez was tagged with the loss, surrendering three hits, four runs and two walks in just 1.1 inning on the mound.

Bethune-Cookman (17-38,10-14 MEAC) left seven runners on the basepads.
