Savannah State Takes Two From Bulldogs

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Cortni Jones and Peyton Mitchell both hit grand slam home runs as Savannah State snapped a nine game losing streak with a double-header win over South Carolina State at Lady Tiger Field.
Jones had three RBI in SSU's 12-2 win in the opener and then drove in six runs in the Lady Tigers 18-1 victory in the second game.
In the first game, Savannah State scored twice in he first inning and added four more in the second inning for a 6-0 lead.
Destiny Beckham and Kameryn Baker both hit singles and scored for SSU in the first inning. In the second inning, Kelsey Cyrus drew a walk with the bases loaded and Jakayla Sullivan hit a three run triple.
The Bulldogs scored twice in the top of the third but Savannah State answered in the bottom half of the inning when Jocelyn Lozano scored on a error and Jones hit a RBI single to make the score 8-2.
Savannah State scored four runs off three hits in the bottom of the fourth as Stacie Smith and Baker had RBI singles and a throwing error by the shortstop allowed a pair of runs to score when Jones reached base on an error for a 12-2 lead.
SSU had nine hits in the game but left eight runners on base and made one error.
Sullivan had four RBI while Baker scored three times. Faith Dickerson was the winning pitcher, striking out eight batters while surrendering just three hits and two walks.
Paige Owens had one hits, one RBI and scored a run for SC State while Jada Lake was tagged with the loss.Lake pitched two innings and gave up five hits, eight runs and 10 walks.
In the second game, SSU (8-27, 3-11 MEAC) exploded for eight runs in the first inning. Jones hit a grand slam home run, Mitchell hit a solo home run, Cyrus hit a RBI double, Smith hit a two-run double
Mitchell drew a walk in the second inning but scored on a sacrifice fly by Amaiya Green for a 9-0 lead.
Lake hit a solo home run for the Bulldogs in the top of the third but Savannah State responded with six runs off three hits in the bottom of the inning. Shayna Byers walked in a run with the bases loaded, Mitchell hit a grand slam and Jones hit a RBI single.
The Lady Tigers finished off the visitors from Orangeburg, South Carolina in the fourth with Smith, Byers and Jones driving in runs for the 17 run win.
Jones had three hits and scored twice in the game while Mitchell drove in five runs, scored three times and had two hits.
Dickerson struck out six batters as she limited the Bulldogs (0-33, 0-14 MEAC) to three hits.
Ja'Nau Cohen was the losing pitcher. Cohen lasted 1.2 innings, giving up seven hits and 10 runs.
