SSU Fall In MEAC Opener

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State lost a double-header to Bethune-Cookman at Lady Tiger Field by scores of 7-0 and 8-4.

The setbacks drop Savannah State to 4-16 overall and 0-2 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

In the first game, B-CU's Alexis Bermudez tossed a one-hitter and struck out eight batters while issuing three walks.

The Wildcats scored three runs in the second inning and added two more in the fourth and seventh innings.

Sasha Killins hit a home run and drove in three runs for Bethune-Cookman.

Jocelyn Lozano had Savannah State's lone hit in the game, a single in the bottom of the seventh.

Faith Dickerson was the losing pitcher. Dickerson pitched seven innings and gave up 10 hits, seven runs, two walks while striking out one.

SSU made three errors in the game while the Wildcats made two. The Lady Tigers left seven runners on base while B-CU left six.

In the second game, Savannah State out-hit the Wildcats 10 to nine but made three errors and left eight runners on base.

B-CU scored five runs off four hits in the first inning but Savannah State answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Lonzano led off with a single and scored on a single by Stacie Smith  Allye Sneed bunted her way on base and later scored on a passed ball.

The Wildcats added a run in the second and another in the third for a 7-2 advantage. 


Smith started the bottom of the sixth with a single and scored on a double by Cortni Jones to pull SSU within 7-3.

Both teams scored runs in the seventh. Brianna Sanders hit a RBI single for the Wildcats and Peyton Mitchell hit a RBI single for Savannah State which allowed Destiny Beckham to cross home plate.

Smith and Mitchell each had three hits for Savannah State. Tanisha Williams suffered the loss on the mound. Williams pitched seven innings and struck out three while issuing two walks.

Kayia Epps-Lee went  4-for-4 for the Wildcats while Destiny Enriquez struck out seven batters and walked two to get the win.

B-CU left six runners on base and made one error in the second contest.
