Savannah State Sweeps UMES

SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State softball team won their first home game of the season with a double-header sweep of Maryland-Eastern Shore at Lady Tiger Field. SSU won the opener 4-3 and completed the sweep with a 4-1 victory in the second game.

In the first game, Savannah State rallied form a 3-2 deficit and scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to get the win while in the second game, the Lady Tigers were led by a two-run home run by Cortni Jones and a solid pitching performance from Faith Dickerson who struck out five batters and held the Hawks to just three hits.

SSU left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning of the first game but were able to score two runs. Allye Sneed bunted her way on base while Kelsey Cyrus and Jocelyn Lozano drew walks to load the bases. Stacie Smith was hit by a pitch which allowed Sneed to score and Destiny Beckham drew a walk which sent Cyrus home for a 2-0 lead.

UMES scored a run in the top of the third and added another in the fifth to tie the game. The Hawks went ahead in the sixth for a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Sneed singled and advanced to second on a ground-out by Cyrus. A single by Lozano allowed Sneed to advance to third and when Smith was intentionally walk the bases were full of Lady Tigers. Beckham reached base on a fielder's choice which allowed Sneed to tie the game at 3-3 and a walk to Amaiya Green sent home Lozano for the game winner.

Beckham had two RBI for SSU while Sneed had two hits and scored twice.

Tanisha Williams was the winning pitcher. Williams pitched seven innings and gave up nine hits, three runs and two walks while recording two strikeouts.

Daeshia Jones had two hits and scored twice for UMES while Nasya Goodman was tagged with the loss. Goodman pitched 6.1 innings and surrendered four hits, four runs and seven walks while striking out six batters.

Both teams made one error and UMES left eight on base while Savannah State left seven on base.

In the second game, SSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead by scoring twice in the second and third innings.

Jakaylah Sullivan and Sneed both crossed home plate in the second inning and Jones' two-run home run over the left field fence in the third for the lead.

Maryland-Eastern Shore prevented a shutout by scoring a run in the top of the fourth but would not score again.

Jones led Savannah State with a home run and a single, scored a run and had two RBI.

The Lady Tigers had seven hits, made two errors and left eight on base.

Jordan Kelly had a double for the Hawks. Leann Gingrich took the loss, giving up seven hits, four runs and four walks in six innings.


UMES left six on base, made three errors.
