Savannah State Begins Conference Play

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- Savannah State opened up their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference baseball schedule with a double-header loss to Florida A&M.
 
The Rattlers won the first game 8-6 and completed the sweep with a 6-3 victory in the second contest.
 
The loss give SSU a 0-2 MEAC record as they fall to 2-10-1 overall.
 
In the first game, FAMU led 6-5 after seven innings of play. In the top of the eighth, Jalen Atterbury hit a RBI double for the Tigers that scored Dwayne Franklin to tie the game at 6-6.
 
Florida A&M answered in their half of the inning at bat when Octavien Moyer and Tucker Rayburn both singled and scored to give the Rattler a 8-6 win.
 
Atterbury drew a walk in the first inning and scored on a single by Luis Lamarchel for a 1-0 lead. Willis McDaniel hit a two-run single for FAMU in the bottom of the inning for a 2-1 lead.
 
The Rattlers added four runs off two hits in the third to expand their advantage to 6-1.
 
In the fourth, Turner Davis, Taylor Wilkinson and Joey Roberson all had RBI singles for Savannah State as the Tigers sent four runners across home plate to close their gap to 6-5.
 
Atterbury had three hits and scored twice for SSU and Roberson added two hits.
 
Luis Torres-Lopez took the loss for the Tigers. Torres-Lopez pitched six innings and gave up 11 hits, three runs and two walks while striking out four.
 
The Tigers made three errors while leaving seven men on base and getting ten hits.
 
FAMU left 11 men on base while committing two errors and collecting 14 hits.
 
Reliever Morgan Mendez got the win and Jeremiah McCollum earned the save. Mendez pitched one inning and struck out two while giving up one run, one hit and one walk while McCollum also pitched one inning and did not yield a hit, run or walk.
 
Rayburn crossed home plate three times for FAMU.
 
In the second game, the Rattlers jumped put to a 6-1 lead before SSU added runs in the seventh and ninth innings.
 
FAMU (8-14, 2-0 MEAC) scored once in the bottom of the second but the Tigers tied the game in the top of the fifth.
 
Aaron Straker led off with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. A sacrifice fly by Atterbury allowed Straker to tie the game at 1-1.
 
The Rattlers scored two more times in the bottom of the inning and chipped on three more in the sixth for a 6-1 lead.
 
Davis hit a solo home run to lead off the top of the seventh for Savannah State and in the ninth, Justin Washington singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Straker to cut the SSU deficit in half.
 
Caleb Hill was tagged with the loss for Savannah State. Hill lasted five innings on the mound and struck out three while giving up four hits, five runs and one walk.
 
The Tigers had five hits in the game and made four errors while stranding six runners on base.
 
Straker had three hits for SSU, scored once and drove in one run.
 
The Rattlers had seven hits and left seven men on base.
 
Moyer had two hits in the game while Josh Hancock was the winning pitcher and McCollum got the save. Hancock pitched seven innings and struck out five while surrendering three hits, two runs and four walks while McCollum pitched a third on a inning and faced two batters. McCollum walked one batter and struck out the other.
