PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- Savannah State fell behind 18-0 and never recovered as the Lady Tigers lost to Maryland-Eastern Shore 78-46 in a game played at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.
SSU (4-13, 2-6 MEAC) went 3 for 13 from the field in the opening quarter while the Hawks made 62.5 percent of their field goals in that same time. UMES led 26-8 after one quarter of play.
The Hawks started the second quarter with a 17-4 run as they stretched their lead to 31 points with 4:43 left.
Savannah State trailed 47-17 at the half.
The Lady Tigers trailed by 30 with just over five minutes left in the third quarter but ended the period with nine straight points as
Robbi Allen made a layup and a 3-pointer while
Jalea Gray and
Heniaya Moton added layups to slice their deficit to 59-38.
Savannah State shot 52.9 percent from the floor in the third quarter while making two of three 3-point attempts.
SSU opened the fourth quarter with a pair of free throws by
Azhana Maxwell to get within 19 points but Maryland-Eastern Shore responded by ending the game with a 19-6 run.
Maxwell was the only Lady Tiger in double figures with 10 points.
Savannah State finished the game shooting 31.6 percent from the floor, 23.5 percent from beyond the arc and 40 percent from the free throw line.
Keyera Eaton scored 15 points for the Hawks.
UMES (13-10, 9-1 MEAC) shot 43.1 percent from the field, made 36 percent of their 3-point attempts and 54.2 percent of their free throw shots.
