SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State women's basketball had a strong opening to the 2019-2020 season on Sunday with a 103-51 rout of Carver College in Tiger Arena.
The Lady Tigers were led by returners
Alexus Bryant and
Le'Andrea Gillis who each put up 21 points on the day. Savannah State had five players in double figures in the lopsided win.
Newcomer
Ta'Kyla Austin put up 16 points with three steals.
Azhana Maxwell and
Amari Heard each recorded 13 points in the win. Bryant led the field in rebounds with 11 on the day, while Gillis grabbed nine boards. SSU outrebounded the Cougars 65-39.
Savannah State returns five players this season and adds seven newcomers to the squad while head coach
Cedric Baker opens his 14
th season at the helm of the program.
The Lady Tigers hope to improve on a 7-19 overall record in the 2018-19 season, their last as a NCAA Division I team and member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
The Lady Tigers will enter the first year of play in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) at the end of November with their opening conference game on Nov. 30.
They will play 22 games all together this season with 14 home games. SSU opens the season with five home games before a short road stint and then two more home games this December to close out the calendar year.
Savannah State returns to action on Friday Nov. 14 with a non-conference game against Morris College. Tip-off in Tiger Arena is set for 7 p.m.
