SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State Lady Tigers were working out the kinks of a young season and finding rhythm in a fresh team comprised of several newcomers on Friday.
Savannah State made easy work of Morris College with a 91-71 victory in Tiger Arena. They improve to 2-0 on the season.
Four Lady Tigers notched double figures in the win. The most promising was freshman
Amari Heard who recorded her first career double-double, grabbing 12 rebounds and putting up 16 points. Sophomore returner
Le'Andrea Gillis led the entire field with a single-game, career-high 31 points.
Junior transfer
Ta'Kyla Austin, in her first year at Savannah State, had a strong outing for the Lady Tigers, putting up 24 points on the night. Returner
Azhana Maxwell had 14 in the win as well.
SSU snapped an early tie in the opening period with a 12-2 run for a 16-7 lead at the 4:05 mark, taking a commanding lead early that they never relinquished. Through the rest of the opening half, SSU held a double-digit lead, going up by as much as 22 points. They led Morris 48-30 into the locker room.
The story remained the same through the third period. Late in the fourth, the Lady Tigers etched out to their largest lead of the night, 91-60, behind a good jump shot and good free-throw from Maxwell. Â
The Lady Tigers continue the season on Nov. 27 with a non-conference game against Allen University. Tip-off in Tiger Arena is set for 1 p.m.
