Lady Tigers drop five-set battle to Middle Georgia State, 2-3

SAVANNAH, GA. – In of the deepest points match Savannah State has had this year, the Lady Tigers took Middle Georgia State all the way to a tie in the deciding set, but failed to finish, falling 2-3 in the non-conference home match on Friday.

The Lady Tigers will play two more non-conference road games against Brewton-Parker and Middle Georgia State, and one Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) road game against Paine College, before returning home on Nov. 12 to face SIAC foe Clark Atlanta. They close the regular season with a conference road match against SIAC East Division leader Albany State.

Savannah State sealed up a close 25-21 win in the opening set behind a late 5-1 run. Tied at 20, an error from the Knights and a service ace from Jedaiah Daniels lifted the Lady Tigers to a 22-20 lead. Daniels continued on the serve as team captain De'Antoine Rodriguez laid down a kill, and Imani Williamson followed suite. A costly error from the visitors handed SSU the 25-21 win.

Middle Georgia State, however, fired back in the second set taking an early 10-6 lead, which they held on to despite a late run from the Lady Tigers. Daniels added a kill to cut the Knights lead to 23-20, but it wasn't enough as the Knight sealed up the set win, 25-20, tying the match.

Late in the third set, Jeilynn Brown scored a kill to tie the set at 22. The Knights fired back moments later to again tie it at 24 on a kill from Leah Spears. Rodriguez earned a kill to lift SSU to a 25-24 lead. An error from Middle Georgia State ended the set, giving SSU the 26-24 win and a 2-1 lead.

In the fourth set, the teams again played point-for-point down the stretch. Two costly SSU errors gave the Knights a 23-22 lead. Cara MacFarland recorded back-to-back kills to give the visitors a 25-22 victory and send the match into the deciding set.

Savannah State senior Jamese Scott tied up the fifth set on a kill at 15 all. A kill from Beau Wilking and an SSU error handed the visitors their third match win of the season with a 17-15 set victory.

Williamson led the Lady Tigers on offense with 17 kills on the night and 4 service aces. Valeria Aldarondo—this week's SIAC Setter of the Week—led the entire field in assists with 50. Aldarondo also tacked on 19 digs. Destini Williams led the defense with 20 digs. Brown earned 11 kills on the night and Scott had 10 kills and a season-high 8 blocks.
