SSU Falls to The Citadel in Home Opener

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Sophomore middle blocker Oneillia Fuller and freshman middle blocker Noria Ceballos Plaza combined for 17 of the Tigers' 35 kills as the Savannah State University volleyball team fell to The Citadel Bulldogs 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 15-25, 13-25) Wednesday in Tiger Arena.
 
Sophomore setter Salma Mia Gonzalez Sosa led the Lady Tigers (0-5) with 20 assists and also had seven digs and three kills, while freshman setter Ashley Jordan recorded 10 assists, six kills, and three digs.
 
SSU began the first set struggling to find their way as they were 7-2 in the in the early going, but they fought back and tied the match at 16. Both teams continued to battle but the Bulldogs (4-3) pulled away to take the set and a 1-0 lead.
 
The Lady Tigers began the second set second strong taking an early 8-4 lead but the Bulldogs went on a 13-7 run to a take a 17-15 scoring advantage. The Lady Tigers scored 10 of the final 16 points to win the set and tie the game at one.
 
Savannah State began the third set struggling as The Citadel took an 8-2 lead. The Lady Tigers continued to give a valiant effort but the Bulldogs continued to pull away and won the set to take a 2-1 lead.
 
The fourth set began with both teams battling back-and-forth in the early going being tied at three but The Citadel took control and held a 19-7 lead. The Lady Tigers continued to fight and scored six of the next seven points but the Bulldogs closed them out to win the set and game.
 
The Citadel was led by Sharlissa De Jesus who recorded 17 kills, nine digs, four service aces and three assists.
 
The Lady Tigers return to game action on Friday when they will travel to The College of William & Mary to battle the Tribe in a non-conference matchup. Game time begins at 7p.m.
