Shut’ko Wins Singles Match; SSU Falls to FAMU Wednesday

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University (3-14, 1-4 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) fell to Florida A&M University (3-13, 3-1 MEAC) 6-1 Wednesday at Tiger Tennis Courts on Senior Day.
 
Freshman Sofia Shut'ko recorded the only point for the Lady Tigers at the No. 2 singles position to cut the lead to 5-1.  The Kiev, Ukraine native lost the first set 6-0 to Karen Machisa, but bounced back to win the other sets 6-2, 6-0 to win the point.
 
Florida A&M won the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead after winning at the No. 2 position as Haleigh Porter and Aylen Hubeaurt defeated SSU's doubles team of Shut'ko and El Kateb 6-0 and at the No. 3 position after Sophia Osabouhien and Rachel Harden defeated SSU's doubles duo of Ekaterina Vorobeva/Shakendra Alston 6-3.
 
The Lady Tigers won the final doubles position as freshman Muskaan Ranjan and junior Sansriti Ranjan defeated Mia Rakotondrazafy and Machisa of FAMU 6-4 at the No. 1 position.
 
The Rattlers increase their lead to 2-0 after Harden defeated El Kateb 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 5 singles position and took a 3-0 lead after Rakotondrazafy defeated Vorobeva 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 singles position.
 
Florida A&M clinched the match after Osabouhien defeated Alston 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 6 singles position and took a 5-0 lead after Hubeaurt defeated Sansriti Ranjan 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 4 singles position before Shut'ko's win at the No. 2 singles position to cut the lead to 5-1.
 
The final match was at the No. 3 singles position as Porter defeated Muskaan Ranjan 7-6 (6), 6-4.
 
The loss to FAMU eliminates the Lady Tigers from the MEAC Championship as the top-four teams in each division qualifies for the tournament.
 
The Lady Tigers finish the team Saturday with a doubleheader against University of Missouri starting at 4 p.m. in Athens, Ga.
