DURHAM, N.C.- Trevor McKenna struck out 15 batters but Savannah State fell short in a 3-1 loss to North Carolina Central, in a game played at the Durham Athletic Park.
McKenna lasted seven innings on the mound, giving up five hits, three runs and two walks. McKenna struck out the side in the first and sixth innings and recorded three strikeouts in the second and third innings.
Greg Smith pitched one inning in relief for the Tigers.
Savannah State scored their only run in the top of the eighth inning when
Daryl Harper hit a solo home run over the right field fence.
Khalyd Cox and
Kyle Gerdts each hit doubles for SSU.
The Tigers (4-13, 1-3 MEAC) ended the contest with four hits while making two errors. SSU left three runners on base.
North Carolina Central scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Zach Michalski and Jordan Varela-Payne both had two hits for NCCU.
Devin Sweet was awarded the win. Sweet pitched a complete game and struck out 12 batters.
The Eagles (17-7, 5-2 MEAC) had five hits on the day and stranded six runners.
