Bartlett and Johnson Set Career Highs; WBB Defeats Allen 79-41 Monday

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Freshmen guards Jazmine Bartlett and Teyah Johnson each recorded 13 points to set career highs as the Savannah State University women's basketball team (4-17) defeated Allen University (15-12) in the final nonconference game of the season.
 
Bartlett added three rebounds and three assists off the bench, while Johnson shot 4-for-9 from the floor and added three rebounds and three assists.  Junior forward Kaylee Allen scored a game-high 20 points in 19 minutes with four steals and five rebounds and freshman guard Heniaya Moton added 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting, including 2-for-3 from the 3-point line.
 
Freshman center Alexxus Sowell added seven points and two blocks, while junior guard Jacqueline Anderson tied a career-high with eight rebounds and freshman guard Nadia Farmer and freshman center Kayla Vance each added six points and Vance added six rebounds.
 
Savannah State scored 11 of the first 13 points of the game to take a nine-point lead, 11-2, with 4:54 remaining in the first quarter, but Allen scored seven of the next 13 points to cut the lead to eight points, 17-9, with 1:30 left.  The Lady Tigers scored the next three points to increase the lead to 11 points, 20-9, with 15 seconds remaining, but an Allen bucket with 10 seconds cut the first quarter SSU lead to nine points, 20-11.
 
The Lady Tigers scored 14 of the first 16 points of the second quarter to take a 21-point lead, 34-13, with 4:18 remaining in the quarter, but Allen scored the next seven points to cut the lead to 14 points, 34-20, with 2:03 left.  Savannah State scored four of the final five points to increase the lead to 17 points, 38-21, at the half.
 
Savannah State scored 13 of the first 16 points of the third quarter to increase the lead to 27 points, 51-24, with 5:59 remaining in the quarter, but the Yellow Jackets scored six of the next eight points to cut the lead to 23 points, 53-30, with 4:17 left.  The Lady Tigers scored the next seven points to increase the lead to 30 points, 60-30, with 1:56 remaining, but Allen scored six of the final nine points to cut the third quarter lead to 27 points, 63-36. 
 
The Lady Tigers scored 15 of the first 16 points of the final quarter to increase their lead to 41 points, 78-37, with 1:39 remaining in the game, but Allen scored four of the final five points to cut the final deficit of 38 points.
 
The Yellow Jackets were led by Afeni Richardson with 14 points and six rebounds, while Kayla Pierce added seven rebounds and five points.
 
The Lady Tigers continue the four game homestand with a rematch against Morgan State University Saturday at 2 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
