WBB Falls to Hampton Monday

HAMPTON, Va. – Savannah State University women's basketball team (4-21, 1-12 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) fell to Hampton University (14-13, 10-4 MEAC) 88-41 Monday in Convocation Center.
 
Freshman forward Kayla Vance tied a career-high with eight points on 4-for-5 shooting from the floor in 16 minutes with six rebounds, while freshman guard Nadia Farmer added eight points and three rebounds.  Junior forward Kaylee Allen scored eight points with five rebounds and five steals.
 
Junior guard Jacqueline Anderson added seven rebounds, four points and two steals, while freshman center Alexxus Sowell added six rebounds, four points and three blocks.
 
The Pirates scored the first two points of the game to take a 2-0 lead with 9:29 to go in the first quarter, but a Sowell layup tied the game at two with 8:47 remaining.  Hampton scored 19 of the final 21 points to take a 17-point, 21-4, first quarter lead, including scoring 17 consecutive points.
 
Hampton scored 13 of the first 17 points of the second quarter to extend their lead to 26 points, 34-8, with 6:09 remaining in the quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored the next six points to cut the lead to 20 points, 34-14, with 3:49 left.  The Pirates scored 14 of the final 23 points of the quarter to take a halftime lead of 29 points, 48-19.
 
The Pirates outscored the Lady Tigers 22-6 during the third quarter to extend the lead to 45 points, 70-25, after three quarters of play.
 
Hampton scored 12 of the first 19 points of the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 50 points, 82-32, with 4:39 remaining in the quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored nine of the next 13 points to cut the lead to 45 points, 86-41, with 17 seconds.  A Pirate layup gave Hampton the 47 point win.
 
The Pirates were led by K'lynn Willis with 18 points, while M. Finney-Smith and Jephany Brown each added 17 points and Ashley Bates added 11 points and seven rebounds.  Brown added seven points and seven steals.
 
The Lady Tigers conclude the three game roadstand with a trip to Daytona Beach, Fla., to face the MEAC leader Bethune-Cookman University Saturday at 2 p.m.
