WBB Falls to MEAC Leader Bethune-Cookman Saturday

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Savannah State University women's basketball team (4-22, 1-13 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) fell to MEAC leader Bethune-Cookman University (22-4, 14-0 MEAC) 75-54 in Moore Gymnasium.
 
Junior forward Kaylee Allen led the team with 20 points, including 18 points in the second half, and with seven rebounds and a career-high six steals, while freshman guard Heniaya Moton and freshman guard Jazmine Bartlett each added 10 points.  Freshman forward Kayla Vance added six points and seven rebounds.
 
Savannah State scored four of the first six points of the first quarter to take a two-point lead, 4-2, with 6:39 remaining in the quarter, but Bethune-Cookman scored eight of the next 10 points to take a four-point lead, 10-6, with 3:57 left.  After a Vance jumper to cut the lead to two points, 10-8, with 3:29 remaining, the Wildcats scored the 10 of the next 12 points to increase the lead to 12 points, but a Moton three-pointer at the buzzer cut the first quarter deficit to nine points, 20-11. 
 
Bethune-Cookman outscored the Lady Tigers 18-7 during the second quarter to take a halftime lead of 20 points, 38-18.
 
The Wildcats outscored Savannah State 26-17 to take a third quarter lead of 29 points, 64-35.
 
Savannah State scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 24 points, 64-40, with 8:31 remaining in the quarter, but the Wildcats scored the next five points to push the lead back to 29 points, 69-40, with 6:26 left.  With Bethune-Cookman still holding a 29-point lead at 74-45, with 4:05 left in the game, the Lady Tigers scored nine of the final 10 points to cut the final deficit to 21 points.
 
The Wildcats were led by Angel Golden with 21 points and added five rebounds, Amaya Scott with 10 points and Briana Hardee with 10 rebounds and eight points.
 
The Lady Tigers host North Carolina Central University Monday at 6 p.m. in Tiger Arena for the home finale.
