NORFOLK, Va. – Junior forward
Kaylee Allen of the Savannah State University women's basketball team (4-20, 1-11 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) set a Division I era school-record with seven made 3-pointers and set a career-high with 32 points as the Lady Tigers fell to Norfolk State University (15-9, 8-4 MEAC) 83-51 Saturday in Echols Hall.
Allen shot 52.6 (10-for-19) percent from the floor, including 70.0 (7-for-10) percent from the 3-point line and added five rebounds in 25 minutes, while freshman center
Alexxus Sowell added a game-high 13 rebounds, four blocks and added five points with two steals.
Junior guard
Praise Russell added five points, three rebounds and two assists, while freshman forward
Kayla Vance added five rebounds.
Norfolk State scored the first five points of the game to take a 5-0 lead, with 7:48 remaining in the first quarter, but Savannah State 17 of the next 27 points to take a two-point lead, 17-15, with 1:40 left. The Spartans scored five of the final seven points to take a first-quarter lead 20-19.
The Spartans scored 14 of the first 20 points of the second quarter to extend their lead to nine points, 34-25, but the Lady Tigers scored 11 of the final 16 points to cut the halftime deficit to three points, 39-36.
Two made free throws by Allen to begin the third quarter cut the lead to a point, 38-38, with 9:21 remaining in the quarter, but Norfolk State scored 20 of the next 24 points to increase the lead to 16 points, 58-42, with 54 seconds left. The Lady Tigers scored the final two points of the quarter to cut the lead to 14 points, 58-44, after three quarters of play.
A three-pointer by Russell cut the lead to 11 points, 58-47, with 9:34 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Spartans scored 25 of the final 29 points to capture the 32-point win.
The Spartans were led by Gabrielle Swinson with 15 points, four rebounds, seven assists and four steals, while Kayla Roberts added 14 points, six rebounds and Alexys Long added 12 points and six rebounds.
The Lady Tigers stay in Virginia to face Hampton University Monday at 5 p.m.
