BALTIMORE, Md.-
Ralueke Orizu came off the bench to score a career-high 19 points but Savannah State would fall to Morgan State 89-88, in a game played at Hill Filed House.
Orizu, a freshman post player, made 9 of 10 shots from the field, pulled down six rebounds and blocked three shots.
The Tigers went the final five and a half minutes without a field goal as Morgan State's Tiwian Kendley made the game-wining layup with ten seconds left. SSU's
Dexter McClanahan missed a 3-pointer as time expired.
Savannah State led 88-83 with 4:12 remaining in the second period but Morgan State's LaPri McCray-Pace hit a pair of free throws and Kendley made a layup to pull the Bears to within one (88-87) with 2:01 on the clock.
In a game that had 12 ties and 11 lead changes, Morgan State led 77-69 with 13:15 left but a 8-0 run by SSU gave the Tigers a 77-73 advantage at the 10:34 mark.
A layup by Kendly cut SSU's lead to 80-79 with 8:19 showing but the Tigers answered with a 3-pointer by
Jahir Cabeza and a free throw by
Alante Fenner to expand their cushion to 84-79 with just under seven minutes remaining.
A 3-pointer by Morgan State's Stanley Davis and a free throw by Kendly allowed the Bears to close their gap to 84-83 with 5:51 left.Â
Zach Sellers hit a jumper for Savannah State followed by one free throw apiece by Fenner and Orizu put SSU back in front by five, 88-83, before the Tigers had their meltdown.
Sellers added 17 points and five assists for the Tigers. McClanahan had 15 points, Fenner added 11 points and 10 rebounds while
Javaris Jenkins chipped in 10 points and 9 rebounds.
Savannah State led by as many as six points in the opening period and took a 59-55 lead into the half. Orizu and McClanahan each had 14 points at the break.
The Tigers, who out-rebounded MSU 51 to 49, shot 36.7 percent from the floor, made 23.8 percent of their 3-point shots and made 20 of 30 shots from the free throw line.
SSU, who was playing the final game of a seven game road trip, falls to 4-13 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Kendley had a game-high 33 points for the Bears, who improved to 3-0 in the MEAC and 7-9 overall.
MSU shot 48.5 percent from the field, 22.2 percent from beyond the arc and 72.4 percent from the free throw line.
