Tigers Upend Norfolk State in OT

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State won their fourth game in a row with a 104-99 overtime victory over Norfolk State, to close out their four-game homestand.

The Tigers (8-13, 5-1 MEAC) snapped a ten game losing streak to Norfolk State and it was the first time SSU defeated the Spartans since an 85-68 win back during the 1960-61 season.

Savannah State scored the first eight points of the extra period with a 3-pointer from Alante Fenner, two free throws from Zach Sellers and a layup and free throw from Austin Dasent to go ahead 97-89 with 3:37 left to play.

Norfolk State responded with a dunk and 3-pointer by Alex Long and Stavian Allen respectively to get within three with 1:24 showing.

After Javaris Jenkins made a layup and a free throw to put SSU ahead by six, the Spartans made it a 100-97 affair after a 3-pointer by Nic Thomas with 26 seconds remaining.

Dexter McClanahan made a pair of free throws to increase the Tigers lead to 102-97 with 20 seconds left but a layup by Thomas pulled Norfolk State within 102-99.

A dunk bySSU senior  Jahir Cabeza with six seconds remaining proved to be the difference with NSU missing two 3-pointers in the final two seconds.

McClanahan had a huge night with a career-highs of 37 points, seven made 3-pointers and 12 made field goals. The junior from Stockbridge, Georgia also had eight rebounds, made 6 of 8 attempts from the free throw line and made three steals.

The Tigers jumped out to a 13-6 lead in the first period and led 34-23 with 6:16 left before intermission.

Norfolk State whittled their deficit to 39-38 with 38 seconds left in the half before McClanahan made a pair of free throws with 29 seconds left.

SSU led 41-38 at the half.

The Spartans began the second half with a 20-9 run to take a 58-50 advantage with 13:53 left.

Norfolk State led by six with 6:46 remaining before the Tigers scored eight straight points thanks to a layup, free throw and 3-pointer by McClanahan and two free throws from Ty'lik Evans to take a 76-74 lead with 5:10 showing.

A 3-pointer by Dasent put SSU ahead 87-85 with just under two minutes left but the Spartans answered with two free throws by Thomas to tie the game.

A jumper by Jenkins with 36 seconds left gave the Tigers a 89-87 lead but a layup by Long with six seconds remaining tied the contest at 89.

Following a SSU turnover, NSU's Thomas missed a 3-pointer with two seconds left which sent the game into overtime.

The Tiger Arena crowd of 1,998 saw a game that featured six ties and 10 lead changes.

Dasent, Fenner, Jenkins and Sellers all added 14 points for the Tigers.Fenner also had six assists.

SSU shot 43.4 percent from the floor, made a season-high of 21 shots beyond the arc and shot 58.3 percent from the free throw line.

Norfolk State (4-16, 2-3 MEAC) was led by Thomas who netted 22 points.

The Spartans out-rebounded Savannah State 41 to 37 but made 23 turnovers. NSU shot 58.2 percent from the field, made 40.9 percent of their 3-point shots and made 80 percent of their free throws.
