SAVANNAH, Ga. – Freshman forward Jalea Gray led the Savannah State University women's basketball team (2-14, 0-5 MEAC) with a career-high 15 points as the Lady Tigers fell to Hampton University (7-9, 3-0 MEAC) 81-53 Saturday in Tiger Arena.
 
Gray shot 5-for-7 from the floor and added four rebounds and two steals, while junior forward Kaylee Allen added 10 points and seven rebounds.  Freshman center Sabree Gallishaw, freshman center Alexxus Sowell and freshman guard Jazmine Bartlett each added seven rebounds, while Bartlett and Sowell each added six points.
 
Hampton scored the first nine points of the game to take a 9-0 lead with 6:35 remaining in the first quarter, Savannah State scored five of the next seven points to cut the lead to six points, 11-5, with 2:05 left.  The Pirates scored nine of the final 10 points of the quarter to take a 14-point, 20-6, after the first quarter.
 
Savannah State scored five of the first seven points in the second quarter to cut the lead to 11 points, 22-11, with 6:31 remaining in the quarter, but Hampton scored 11 of the next 19 points to increase the lead to 14 points, 33-19, with 2:10 left.  The Lady Tigers scored three of the final four points of the quarter to cut the halftime deficit to 12 points, 34-22. 
 
Hampton scored 13 of the first 17 points of the third quarter to increase the lead to 21 points, 47-26, with 4:58 remaining in the quarter, but a Gray layup cut the lead to 19 points, 47-29, with 4:17 left.  The Pirates scored 11 of the final 15 points of the quarter to take a 25-point lead, 58-33, after the third quarter.
 
After a Hampton made free throw to increase the lead to 26 points, 59-33, with 9:18 remaining in the fourth quarter, an Allen layup cut the lead to 24 points, 59-35, with 9:09 left.  The Pirates scored 22 of the final 40 points for the 28 point win.
 
The Pirates were led by Monnazjea Finney-Smith with a double-double of 19 points and 13 steals, while Ashley Bates added 15 points and Chenya Sealey added 13 points and nine rebounds.
 
The Lady Tigers finish the four game homestand with Norfolk State University Monday at 6 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
