Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State let a nine point lead get away but held on to defeat Howard 91-90 in a game played at Tiger Arena before a crowd of 2,033.
It was the Tigers third win in four games as they improved to 3-1 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.
SSU led 72-63 with 9:38 remaining in the contest but Howard used a 21-9 run to go ahead 84-81 at the 4:05 mark, following a layup by Ibrahim Dosunmu.
A pair of free throws by Howard's Dalique Mingo put the Bison ahead 90-87 with 1:17 showing.
Two free throws by Austin Dasent closed the SSU gap to 90-89 and a layup by Alante Feener proved to be the game-winning shot with 35 seconds remaining.
Howard had a chance to win their first conference game of the year but Mingo missed a layup with 11 seconds left and RJ Cole missed a 3-pointer with one second on the clock.
Fenner led a trio of Savannah State players in double figures with a career-high 27 points. His previous career-high was 18 points which he scored against Wichita State in 2017 and Tulane and Bethune-Cookman in 2014. Fenner also had a team-high 10 rebounds.
Dexter McClanahan added 22 points and Dasent scored 12. Zach Sellers dished out a game-high eight assists.
The Tigers (6-13) shot 42 percent from the floor and 80 percent from the free throw line but only made 7 of the 42 shots they took from beyond the arc.
In a first period that featured seven ties and three lead changes, Savannah State led by as many as nine points. The Bison fought back and went ahead 49-48 with under a minute left in the half but SSU closed the period with a 3-pointer by Ty'lik Evans and a dunk from McClanahan to go into the break with a 53-49 lead.
Cole and Charles Williams each had 27 points for Howard. The Bison out-rebounded SSU 48-41.
Howard (3-17, 0-4 MEAC) shot 46.3 percent from the field, 46.7 percent from 3-point range and 66.7 percent from the free throw line.
