WBB Falls to Howard Monday

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Junior forward Kaylee Allen led the Savannah State University women's basketball team (2-13, 0-4 MEAC) with 17 points, while freshman center Alexxus Sowell recorded a career-high with 15 rebounds as the Lady Tigers fell to Howard University (6-11, 2-2 MEAC) 87-59 Monday in Tiger Arena.
 
Allen added seven rebounds, four steals, two assists and two blocks, while Sowell added eight points on 3-for-6 shooting from the floor with three blocks.  Freshman guard Jazmine Bartlett, freshman center Kayla Vance and freshman guard Heniaya Moton each added eight points each and Vance added nine rebounds.
 
Howard scored 11 of the first 12 points of the game to take a 10-point lead, 11-1, with 7:43 remaining in the first quarter, but Savannah State scored 16 of the next 23 points to cut the lead to a point, 18-17, with 1:55 left.  The Bison scored the next four points to increase its lead to five points, 22-17, with 24 seconds remaining, but a Sowell layup with two seconds cut the first quarter deficit to three points, 22-19.
 
Savannah State scored 10 of the next 18 points to cut the lead to a point, 30-29, with 5:05 remaining in the second quarter, but Howard scored 15 of the next 18 points to take a 13-point halftime lead, 45-32.
 
The Bison scored 15 of the first 21 points in the third quarter to take a 22-point lead, 60-38, with 3:12 remaining, but Savannah State scored the next six points to cut the lead to 15 points, 60-44, with 1:22 left.  Howard scored the last four points of the quarter to take a 20-point lead, 64-44, after three quarters.
 
Howard scored seven of the first eight points of the fourth quarter to increase its lead to 26 points, 71-45, with 8:20 remaining, but Savannah State scored eight of the next 15 points to cut the lead to 25 points, 78-53, with 3:45 left.  The Bison scored nine of the next 11 points to increase its lead to 32 points, 87-55, with 1:15 left, but the Lady Tigers finished the quarter scoring the final four points.
 
The Bison was led by Cursty Morre with 19 points, Ayonna Williams with 15 points and eight rebounds and Sarah Edmond and Jayla Thornton each added 12 points.
 
The Lady Tigers continue the four game homestand with Hampton University Saturday at 4 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
