Volleyball Drops Both Matches Saturday at Colonial Classic

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.  – The Savannah State University volleyball team (2-5) dropped both of the matches Saturday to Davidson College (3-1) 3-0 (7-25, 16-25, 14-25) and to host College of William & Mary (2-4) 3-0 (11-25, 15-25, 21-25) in Kaplan Arena.
 
Freshman outside hitter Brooke Sanford led the Lady Tigers with 11 kills, 15 digs and two blocks with a .333 hitting percentage in two matches, while junior middle blocker Charlinda Colbert added 10 kills. 
 
Freshman setter Salma Gonzalez led the team with 19 assists and added four kills and eight digs in two matches, while senior setter Alee Quint added 16 assists and freshman outside hitter Amanda Rullan Vilanova and freshman libero Leiri Melendez each added 10 digs.

Colbert led the Lady Tigers with five kills, while Sanford added four kills and a .444 hitting percentage with eight digs.  Gonzalez led the team with seven assists and added four digs and two kills and Quint added five assists and two digs.  Rullan Vilanova added seven digs with two kills. 
 
Davidson scored 10 of the first 12 points in the first set to take an eight-point lead, 10-2, but the Lady Tigers recorded back-to-back points to cut the lead to six points, 10-4.  The Wildcats outscored SSU 15-3 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 1-0 match lead.
 
The Wildcats scored three of the first four points in the second stanza to take a two-point lead, 3-1, but the Lady Tigers scored the next four points to take a point lead, 5-4.  Davidson scored seven of the next 10 points to take a three-point lead, 11-8, but Savannah State scored the next two points to cut the lead to a point, 12-11.  Davidson outscored SSU 13-5 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 2-0 match lead.
 
The Lady Tigers scored six of the first nine points in the final frame to take a three-point lead, 6-3, but Davidson outscored SSU 22-8 during the rest of the set to win the set and the match.
 
The Wildcats were led by Katharine Franz and Ciera Cockrell with eight kills each, Mason Rooney with 21 assists and Elise Edman with seven digs.
 
William & Mary 3, Savannah State 0
Sanford led the Lady Tigers with seven kills and with seven digs with a .286 hitting percentage, while Charlinda and freshman middle blocker Tyran Chenault each added five kills.  Charlinda hit .300, while Chenault hit .308 and added three blocks. 
 
Gonzalez led the team with 12 assists and added two kills, three service aces and four digs, while Quint added 11 assists.  Melendez added six digs and Rullan Vilanova with four kills. 
 
William & Mary scored 20 of the first 24 points in the first set to take a 20-4 lead, but the Lady Tigers scored the next five points to cut the lead to 21-9.  W&M outscored SSU 4-2 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 1-0 match lead. 
 
The Lady Tigers scored four of the first seven points to take a point lead, 4-3, but the Tribe scored 15 of the next 21 points to take an eight-point lead, 18-10.  The Lady Tigers scored the next three points to cut the lead to five points, 18-13, but W&M outscored SSU 7-2 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 2-0 match lead. 
 
Savannah State scored 10 of the first 18 points in the final frame to take a two-point lead, 10-8, but the Tribe scored 11 of the next 18 points to take a two-point lead, 19-17.  After back-to-back points for the Lady Tigers to tie the set at 19, W&M outscored SSU 6-2 during the rest of the set to win the set and the match.
 
The Tribe was led by Sydney Biniak with 14 kills and a .591 hitting percentage, Autumn Brenner with 22 assists and Lauren Moussaid with 13 digs. 
 
The Lady Tigers travel to Statesboro for the GATA Challenge next weekend.  Savannah State plays a single match Friday against host Georgia Southern University at noon and a doubleheader Saturday with Kennesaw State University at 10 a.m. and GS at noon.
