Jennifer Rosado, eight kills, and freshman outside hitter
Brooke Sanford, six kills, combined for 14 of the 29 kills as Savannah State University volleyball team (2-9) fell to The Citadel (5-11) 3-0 (14-25, 18-25, 21-25) Tuesday in McAlister Field House.
Rosado added three blocks and a .238 hitting percentage, while Sanford added five digs. Senior setter
Alee Quint led the team with 13 assists and with eight digs, while freshman setter
Salma Gonzalez added 11 assists, five digs and four kills. Freshman libero
Leiri Melendez added six digs, while freshman outside hitter
Amanda Rullan Vilanova added three kills and freshman middle blocker
Tyran Chenault added three kills and three blocks.
Savannah State scored seven of the first 13 points to take a point lead, 7-6 in the first set, but The Citadel scored the next four points to take a three-point, 10-7. The Bulldogs outscored SSU 15-7 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 1-0 match lead.
The Citadel scored the first three points to take a 3-0 lead in the second frame, but the Lady Tigers scored six of the next nine points to tie the set at six. The Bulldogs scored 14 of the next 20 points to take an eight-point lead, 20-12, forcing a Savannah State timeout. After the timeout, the Lady Tigers scored six of the next seven points to pull within three points, 21-18, but the Bulldogs scored the final four points to win the set and to take a 2-0 match lead.
Savannah State scored five of the first eight points in the final stanza to take a two-point lead, 5-3,but the Bulldogs scored the next two points to tie the set at five. The Lady Tigers scored seven of the next 10 points to take a four-point lead, 12-8, but The Citadel scored six of the next nine points to pull within a point, 15-14. SSU scored the next two points to increase its lead to three points, 17-14, but the Bulldogs outscored the Lady Tigers 11-4 during the rest of the set to win the set and the match.
The Bulldogs were led by Moria Smith and Autumn Bennett with 12 kills each, Megan Fuhr with 20 assists and Caricia Rodriguez with 10 digs.
The Lady Tigers head north to Virginia this weekend for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference North/South Challenge. SSU plays a single match Friday against Norfolk State University at 7 p.m. in Norfolk and plays a doubleheader Saturday with University of Maryland Eastern Shore at 11 a.m. and Hampton University at 4 p.m. in Virginia Beach.
