SAVANNAH, Ga. – With the FIU Classic canceled this weekend in Miami, Fla., the Savannah State University volleyball team picked up another tournament this weekend with the FAU Invitational in Boca Raton, Fla.
The Lady Tigers play a single match Friday against host Florida Atlantic University (6-2) at 7 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday against Stetson University (0-9) at 11 a.m. and North Dakota State University (6-3) at 1 p.m.
Savannah State was originally schedule for two matches in Miami Saturday against the University of South Alabama and host Florida International University, but the FIU Arena is being used a shelter from the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.
The matches this weekend is the first matches since playing a doubleheader Sept. 2 in Williamsburg, Va., since three matches in the GATA Challenge last weekend and the midweek match against Charleston Southern University last Tuesday were canceled. SSU and Georgia Southern University will host home-and-home matches to be determine later, and the CSU match will also be made up, but the Kennesaw State University match will not be made up.
The Lady Tigers are led by junior middle blocker
Charlinda Colbert with 1.68 kills per set, while senior setter
Alee Quint leads the team with 3.57 assists per set, freshman libero leads with 3.04 digs per set and freshman middle blocker
Tyran Chenault leads with 0.86 blocks per set.
FAU's only losses has been to University of Central Florida (3-1) and the University of Miami (3-2) and has posted five 3-0 wins. The Owls are led by Sigourney Kame with 4.77 kills per set, Ivone Martinez with 13.61 assists per set and Alex Cardona with 4.43 digs per set.
Stetson is looking for its first win of the season and are led by Eva Deisa with 2.71 kills per set, Naina Ivanova with 8.57 assists per set and Chelcie Spence with 3.66 digs per set.
North Dakota State started the season 0-2, but has won six of the last seven matches, including a 3-1 win against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent Florida A&M University. The Bison are led by McKenzie Burke with 3.00 kills per set, Brianna Rasmusson with 9.61 assists per set and Mikaela Purnell with 5.97 digs per set.
